Mobile Meteor Communications

Meteor (Mobile Meteor Communications) is the third mobile telephone operator, after Vodaphone Ireland and O2 Ireland, with being arrived on the market Irish. Meteor is a subsidiary company of eircom Group plc. Eircom bought it in 2005 for €420 million.

Their code is 085 same if from now on with the Portabilité, all the numbers in 085 do not belong inevitably any more to subscribed Meteor.

In March 2007, Meteor counted approximately 819.000 customers, that is to say 17% on behalf of the market.

History

In 1998, the director of the regulation of telecommunications launched a competition to acquire the license third company of mobile telephony. Two companies made a bidding, Orange Limited Communications, then directed by Hutchinson Whampoa, and Meteor Mobile Communications (at this time made up there of Western Wireless, Western communications limited and TWG Ireland LLC). In June 1998, it was announced that Meteor was the first in the competition. However Orange generated a lawsuit against the director to prevent the license from being acquired. This lawsuit failed finally and in June 2000 Meteor acquérit the license of the third company of telecommunication.
