Mngwa

The Mngwa is a legendary animal which is especially known in savannas of Tanzania. It is often confused with the Ours Nandi, another animal of legend which, him, was especially seen more in north, to the Kenya. It is also called the nunda .

History

Mngwa comes from the old man swahili and means stupid strange . The first mention of this animal comes from a poem of the XIIe century, in which one of the protagonists, Fuma wa Ba-Vriy, declares there: " Nangia mwituni haliwa Na Mngwa " , which means " I am inserted in the forest to be eaten by the strange animal there ".

The first testimonys of white colonists claiming to have seen it date from the Années 1900. In 1922, British say to have to face it in a village of fishermen of Tanzania where it égorgea several people. Some of them tightened tufts of gray hairs in their hands. In 1938, another resident of Tanzania, William Hichens, confirms in the scientific newspaper Discovery that several natives were attacked by Mngwa. In 1954, Patrick Bowen, a hunter which was put at its research, described its prints like identical to those of a leopard but much larger.

What is it?

Mngwa is usually described like large cat-like the larger than a leopard. Its principal characteristic is that it would have a striped fur which makes it resemble that of a Tigre, although its colors seem much less blazing. By far, moreover, it seems to have only one color.

The scientists who believe in the existence of the animal think that it could be a question of a new species of cat-like, very rare, or of a subspecies of leopard larger than the standard species. It is not excluded, according to them, that it is about a subspecies of tiger losing its lines.

The cryptozoologist Bernard Heuvelmans believes on his side that it could be a question of a larger species of African Chat gilded.
