The mkhedruli (Géorgien: მხედრული, literally “secular”) is the Alphabet used to transcribe the Géorgien.

History

The mkhedruli probably appeared about the 11th century starting from the Khutsuri, an older alphabet géorgien; it was used for the secular writings (from where its name), while a combination of the khutsuri and Asomtavruli were useful for the religious writings. These the last two alphabets fell little by little in disuse and the mkhedruli remained the only alphabet used to write the géorgien.

Five letters were abandoned during second half of the 19th century and are not used any more nowadays.
