Mizuage

The Mizuage (水揚げ, to pronounce “semi-zou-have-ford”, literally " to raise the eau") was a fundamental stage of the formation of the Japanese Geisha: it marked the end of their training as a maiko by the sale of their Virginité, announcing their advent with the ripe age.

Unfolding

When the geisha which had formed it judged some worthy, the bunch of the maiko symbolically was cut. One gave then a festival in his honor. Once the completed ceremony, the ex-apprentie was authorized “to change collar”, i.e. which it could raise the white collar characteristic of the geisha instead of the red carried by the maiko. It also changed haircut, passing from the mode momoware of the apprenties to the ofuku specific to the older women.
