Mizérieux

Mizérieux is a common French, located in the department of the the Loire and the area the Rhone-Alps.

Geography

History

In 994, i.e. there is nearly thousand years, Mizérieux was named IN MISERIACO.

The historians propose two assumptions to us on the etymology: maybe of the name of a Latin man Miser to which one would have added the suffix iacum and which would have come in our region after the Roman Emperor Claude.

The Claude emperor was emperor of Lugdunum (Lyon) at the beginning of the first millenium and it is at that time that the town of Feurs was founded. It is possible that a little later (4th century) MISERIACUM, if it is about him, founded IN MISERIACO. It is a not checked assumption.

The second assumption would be that this first known nomination comes from a place name in ruins, from where the appearance of " MISER ".

To support this we will add that much later Mizérieux was called MEZERE name which gave by degradation of language Masure (Hurdy-gurdy masonry). One finds remainder today a commune of the name of MEZERES in Yssingelais or the etymology is not any doubt.

The evolution of the name of our village would be interesting to follow if one knew the approximate dates of the changes of name.

It would be also curious to know the causes and, possibly the effects of these changes. One is in right to think that those come primarily from the evolutions and the orientations of the language.

Of IN MISERIACO about the year millet, the name evolves/moves in MISERIACUS (name can be carried already before just as MISERIACUM) then later in MASERIACUS, MESERE in MYSIRIACUS to become MAYSERUI (from which comes can be the name of " MESERI " in local patois). More close to us under the old mode one finds MAYSIRIEU then the parish takes the name of MISERIEU.

After the revolution of 1789 during the replacement of the parishes by the communes one finds the two terminations: without X and with X but MIZERIEUX with X at the end is the most current termination. Z comes then which will replace the S and MIZERIEUX will take final turning.

Under the old mode and until 1750, Mizérieu or Mizérieux belonged to the seigniory of Nervieux. This one was one of most important and of oldest of Drill. During several century, of 1200 to 1750, there was at its head various people who followed one another, unquestionable belonging to families knew, to see famous.
