Mitrofan Petrovitch Bogajèwski

Mitrofan Petrovitch Bogajevski (francized), Bogajèwski (Ukrainian) (МитрофанПетровичБогаевский): November 23rd 1881, Petrovskoï (Russia) - April 1st 1918, Rostov-sur-le-Don (Russia).

After having attended the faculty of history of the university of Pétersbourg, where it was, during all its years of study, chair Amicale compatriots of the Gift, Mitrofan Bogajevski taught, as from 1911, in an establishment of Novotcherkassk. As from 1914 he was the director of another school at the village of Kamenskaïa.

Member of any party, it studied the history of the military region of the Gift and militated for the rebirth of the old traditions cossacks and the development of the local culture cossack. Speaker, called " the cantor of Don" , it had a great prestige among the Cosaques.

After the Revolution of February 1917, it became in March the president of the Assemblée cossack of all Russia with Pétrograd. In April it became in Novotcherkassk the president of the first gathering (congress) of the Cosaques of the Gift, which appointed it president of the executive committee for the preparation of the payment of the elections and their convocation for the military region of the Gift.

Bogajevski gave again direction with the popular right cossack. It prepared the resolution of the questions raised by local self-management founded about the equal rights, the absence of castes and the right by the vote for all. The draft Regulation on the government cossack of Bogajewski was founded on uses existing on the territory of the military region of the Gift before 1721: " Ground of the gift of Dieu" (territories along the Gift and of the Donetsk, granted by God to the cossacks, according to the tradition) was the property of the cossacks of the Gift; but its project recognized also the rights of the peasants of the area on the grounds of the land great landowners (the maximum standard was of 35 dessiatines); the RMD was an inalienable but autonomous part of Russia; the constitution of a government elected of the Gift with at its head was envisaged a Ataman. "

The large military assembly, convened after 196 years of interruption, from May 26th to June 18th with Novotcherkassk, approved the proposals of Bogajevski and elected like chair the ataman Kalédine. In May, the bill on self-management cossack was sent to the provisional government, which made a correction there: the direction of the RMD would be ensured by a police chief of the provisional government. Bogajevski obtained from the assembly of the cossacks the abrogation of this provision. After the crushing of the revolt of Kornilov (in August), the provisional government, showing Kalédine to have taken part in the revolt, convened it in front of a court. At the instigation of Bogaïevski, the Parliament restores an old law cossack: " In the Gift, one does not give personne". Bogajevski had to compose with the Soviets, but was always their adversary and remained an enemy of principle of the Bolchevisme. On the initiative of Bogajevski the Parliament proclaimed on October 20th the independence of the RMD until the organization in Russia of a government acceptable for the cossacks.

Bogajevski was frankly hostile with the Révolution of October, gave an opinion against the introduction of the Soviet capacity and was among the instigators of one of the first armed insurrections which marked the beginning of the civil war. It entered in December " Civil Soviet of Don" who claimed with the role of government of all Russia. Its actions against the Soviet capacity did not obtain supports it majority of the cossacks and were crowned by a failure.

January 29th, 1918, Bogaïevsky and Kalédine gave up their full powerss. March 6th, Bogajevski was stopped by the red guards in the village of Vélikokniajeski. He was imprisoned in Novotcherkassk then in Rostov-sur-le-Don where the Bolcheviks shot it in April 1918.
