Mister-the onion-the andouille
Mister-the onion-the andouille is in the beginning an imaginary play practiced in the series of fiction Annals of the Disc-world of Terry Pratchett. It is evoked in the novels: Three Sœurcières , In Guet! and Mécomptes of fairies .
It was adapted by Dr. Andrew Millard and Terrence CAT to be played as a " vrai" card deck. The rules and the design of the charts were published on Usenet as of 1993. The play contains elements of Blackjack and Poker.
The rules published on Usenet were approved by Terry Pratchett.
Definition
Very complex card deck (called peel-onion sometimes) to which the Disc-world is devoted with passion. Inter alia gaining combinations, let us quote: the pair of onions, the intermittent fifth, double bread, the pentacle of onion, the double onion, triple onion (three kings and three aces) and the large onion that nothing can exceed apart from a perfect sequence of nine charts.-
Definition drawn from Disc-world: the Vade mecum of Terry Pratchett and Stephen Briggs
Play
The most remarkable aspect of the play is that it requires a package containing eight colors: a normal play (clover, square, heart, spade), and a Spanish play - or Tarot - (sticks, swords, cuts and parts).This represents the eight mysteries minor of a play of " Carot" Disc-world: sticks, swords, cuts, parts, octagones, elephants, tortoises and crowns.
The play divides these 8 colors of charts into logical pairs: clover and sticks, spades and swords, cuts and hearts, and squares and parts.
Note: It is possible to use two packages " normaux" , if one marks the charts so as to recognize the 4 " nouvelles" colors.
Unfolding
Each player receives a hand of ten charts: 5 hidden charts, then 5 not hidden charts. With the reception of his the first 5 charts (hidden), the player can throw some up to four and receive news in the place from them. He receives then his five charts " ouvertes" (except for the donor, which also hides its five last charts).The first player starts, while trying to form one of the gaining combinations described further, and by revealing it. The following player must then create a combination of stronger value, or withdraw himself. If it exposes a stronger combination, the first player can then try to create a combination of still higher value, or to withdraw himself.
One continues the process thus, in the direction of the needles of a watch, until there remains only one player, who gains the hand.
Deduct points
The charts " simples" are worth the figure marked on those Ci (ex: one 5 of heart is worth 5), the figures are worth 10 points, and the aces are worth one or eleven points, with the choice of the player. The gaining combinations, in the order ascending of value, are the following ones:Among the recurring combinations, one finds:
- Bread, two charts of a full value of 20 (9 and ace, or two figures)
- the Onion, two charts of a full value of 21 (ace and figure)
- the Bread , two charts of full value 20;
- the Simple Onion , two charts of full value 21;
- the Intermittent Fifth , three charts or more full value ranging between 16 and 21 included, of which only one is not same pair of colors;
- Brelan d' Oignon , three charts of full value 21;
- Flush , like the Intermittent Fifth , but all the charts must be same pair of colors;
- the Onion Square, four charts of full value 21;
- the Oignon Prince, a combination of 6-7-8, any color;
- the Onion Pentacle, five charts of full value 21;
- the King d' Oignon' , a combination of 7-7-7, any color;
- the Onion Hexagon, six charts of full value 21;
- Royal Wild , combination 8-8-8 with a hand where the 8 are " sauvages" (see following paragraph);
- the Onion Heptagon, seven charts of full value 21;
- Double Onion , two figures and two aces;
- Triple Onion , three figures and three aces;
- Small Onion , four figures and four aces;
- Large Onion , five figures and five aces;
Modifieurs
The modifieurs can be played to increase the value of a hand. These rules are optional (separately the rule " estropier Mr. Oignon) and can be or not included in the play. The modifieurs are the following (some are named according to characters of the Disc-World):
-
Estropier Mr. Oignon : if a player exposes a " large oignon" , an opponent can expose a flush of 9 charts and gain the hand instantaneously. If a player exposes a " large or small a oignon" , an opponent can expose a flush of 10 charts and gain the hand instantaneously. A player with a flush of 10 charts can also use it to override a player who would previously have estropié a " oignon" with a flush of 9 charts. ( Estropier Mr. Oignon is the only nonoptional modifior).
-
Eight no one : In a normal hand, the 8 can be played with a value of 0 (or of 8, with the choice of the player). He can thus be included in an existing onion, to increase by 1 the number of charts without changing the full value. Once played like null chart, the 8 becomes a wild chart in the following hand (it can then replace any chart), and the modifior cannot be used. With the following hand, the 8 becomes again normal, and the modifior can again be used.
-
wild Estropier : When the 8 are wild , one cannot Estropier Mr. Oignon if the current flush contains more than 8 savages that the small one or large onion which one tries of estropier.
-
the Octavo : When the 8 are wild , the regrouping of the 8 of the eight colors is regarded as a small onion , but beats all the others small onions . It can be estropié, like a large onion .
-
the Lady : a player can reveal the queen of spades for one of these two effects:
- if no 8 with the hand is wild, the player can take two charts of the pickaxe, then to choose one of the two charts to replace its queen of spade.
- if it has of the 8 savages, the player can oblige any adversary to give value 1 to one of the aces which it has in hand. The adversary chooses which ace is devaluated.
-
the Destiny : If the queen of spade were played and replaced by another chart of the pickaxe like known as above, the king of cut can be also revealed to him and replaced, thus preventing the player who played the queen to play his aces. So of the eight are of the eight savages, the king of cut can be played in order to reallocate value 8 to them; but if he plays the king of the kind, any other player (not the same one!) who with the queen of spades can reveal it so that the 8 remain wild.
-
Large A' Tuin : The player who reveals the lady of parts can withdraw eight of the value of one of the chart and add it to the value of another chart. The values of the charts must remain between 1 and 11.
-
the Elephants : a player who reveals four charts, each one being either 9 or 10 (or one 8 savage), plus the queen of parts, can give points of a chart to another to make an onion of two charts, and can take the others 9 (respectively 10) like one (2 respectively). However, any other onion of two charts beats that there.
-
the Emissary of the Eight : To play a knave of diamonds when the eights wild are made only the players who used one eight as a zero value cannot play theirs any more ace. When the eights are wild, to play the knave of diamonds makes that the aces cannot be played any more and the eights cannot take any more values 1 and 11.
-
Death: To play the king of swords " tue" a figure in the hand of each player by having at least two in the hand. A figure " tuée" cannot belong to an onion of two charts, and if the eights are wild, the killed figures cannot either belong to an onion of three charts, but can always belong to another group.
-
Archichancelier : When he is played, the servant of stick is wild in any hand. However, a player who plays the servant of sticks must assign value 8 to all 8 qu ' it plays. Moreover, any player can play the king of swords after the servant of sticks was played, thus the servant of sticks ceases being wild and all the other players must show a chart which they did not show yet.
-
Insane the : If the knave of clubs is played by any player before the first player played its first group of charts, the breads and the onions exchange their places in the value of the combinations. Thus, the bread of two charts beats the onion of two charts, the bread of three charts beats the onion of three charts,… but the large onion remains higher than a large bread . It of course becomes possible for a player to play a " estropier Mr. Pain".
