Missolonghi
Missolonghi (in Greek: Μεσολόγγι) is a Greek city of Étolie-Acarnanie, located on northern bank of the gulf of Patras. It is on bank is of a lagoon ( Limnothalassa ) which is used for the aquiculture and fishing.
It owes especially its celebrity with the seats which it had to undergo during the Guerre of Greek independence.
The city is still surrounded by its ramparts built by the Vénitiens. The principal door is the “Door of the Exit”, by where besieged tried to force, without success, the seat in 1826. Just beside this door, in a small garden the heroön is dedicated to the defenders of the city fallen at the time of the seats. A central tumulus accommodates the anonymities. On its line, fall it from Markos Botzaris by the French sculptor David of Angers, then the monument with Lord Byron which contains the heart of the poet philhellene.
