Mandate of the United NationsMission of Observation of the United Nations for the organization of a Referendum in the Western Sahara:
created in April 1991 by resolution 690 of the Safety advice, this detachment of 230 soldiers (of which 25 French divided out of 11 sites) supervises the activities of the forces in presence as well as the preparation of the referendum on the final status.
To organize a referendum having to determine the future of the area and to ensure the control of the shifts in population. The fundamental question consisted in deciding if the inhabitants of the the Western Sahara wanted their independence or preferred to be integrated into the Morocco. After the referendum, the Mission had as a mandate to supervise the cease-fire.
