Mission of observation of the United Nations in Georgia
The Mission of observation of the United Nations in Georgia (MONUG) (in English UNOMIG for United Nation To observe Mission In Giorgia) was created the August 24th 1993 by resolution 858 of the Safety advice of the United Nations to make sure of the respect of the cease-fire signed the July 27th between the Georgia and the autonomous republic of Abkhazie, in particular in the town of Sukhumi.
Eighty eight soldiers were deployed in the areas and the mandate is regularly renewed since.
Presentation
The mandate of the MONUG is of:- to check the respect of the agreement of cease-fire of the July 27th 1993 between the government géorgien and the Abkhazian authorities of Georgia, by giving an special attention to the situation in the town of Sukhumi;
- to inquire into information making state of violations of the cease-fire;
- to try to regulate the incidents of this kind with the parts concerned;
- to submit a report with the General secretary on the execution of the mandate, including the violations of the agreement of cease-fire.
Several amendments modified these components with the passing of years (creation of the mission of CIVPOL (CIVilian POLice), modification of the composition or extension of the mandate,…).
The March 31st 2006, by its resolution 1666, the Safety advice extended the mandate of the MONUG until the October 15th 2006.
Site of intervention
The area of conflict is on the Abkhazian territory, i.e., between the north-eastern coast of the Black Sea, the Psov river in the west (Russian border ), the Inguri river in the east (Cease Fire Line - CFL) and with the southern slopes of the the Caucasus. The security zone on the side géorgien starts in Inguri River. Inguri River formed the natural border between old SR of Abkhazie and old SR of Georgia, at the time of the Soviets.
Composition
Manpower
With the April 30th 2006, manpower were the following: 131 personnel in uniform, including 120 military observers and 11 policemen; supported by 2 warrant officer (Medical personnel), of the civil personnel recruited on the international plan (94) and room (186) and 2 volunteer of UNO

Details
The MONUG is a mission “without family”. The duration of stay of a French observer is generally 6 months but can go up to two years. The majority of the foreign observers last one stay of approximately a year.
