Miss Dumesnil

Marie-Francoise Merchant , known as Miss Dumesnil , born with Paris the January 2nd 1713 and died in Paris the February 20th 1802, is a French Actrice .

She began with the Th3e4atre Fran1cais in 1737, fills in the tragedy, with a success always growing, the roles of queens and princesses and was the rival of M Lecouvreur and Clairon. She excelled especially in the roles of Mérope, of Clytemnestre, Athalie and Agrippine.

Questioned after having seen playing Miss Dumesnil, the British actor David Garrick, in visit with Paris, answered: “By seeing it, I could not think of the actress; it is Agrippine, it is Sémiramis, it is Athalie which I saw! ”

She left the theater in 1775.

One published under his name, in 1800 and 1823, of the Mémoires written on his notes, which contain useful councils on the declamation.
