Mirow

Mirow is a German city located in the Mecklembourg-Strelitz, State of the Mecklembourg-Poméranie-Western.

Geography

Mirow is a city located in an area of lakes on southern bank of the lake Mirow, this one is connected to the lake Müritz and the river Havel by a system of lakes, rivers and channels. This town of Mirow has several lakes on its territory. The neighbouring cities of Diermitz, Fleeth, Granzow, Peetsch and Starsow were incorporated in Mirow in 2004. In June 2005 its population rose with 3. 773 inhabitants, this city has a surface of 84.08 km2, density: 15 inhabitants with km2, altitude: 65 meters.

History

Henri II Borwin de Mecklembourg offered a ground to the Hospital ones. In 1227, the order of Hospital based a commandery on the edges of the lake Mirow. In 1701, the city became part of the principality of Mecklembourg-Strelitz. The castle of Mirow was built on the edge of the lake Mirow, it was the residence of the dukes of Mecklembourg-Strelitz. This castle was built in 1708, but was partially destroyed by a fire in 1742. Adolphe-Frederic III of Mecklembourg-Strelitz made rebuild the castle (1749 - 1752). The last duke of Mecklembourg-Strelitz, Adolphe-Frederic VI of Mecklembourg-Strelitz was buried on the island of Mirow.
