Mireille Balin
Mireille Balin , Actress French, born White Mireille Césarine Balin with Monte Carlo, Monaco, the July 20th 1909, deceased the November 9th 1968 with Clichy, France. Regarded as one of the more handsome actors of the French cinema of the years 1930, if not most beautiful, she died in anonymity and misery.
The vamp of the pre-war period
Mireille Balin is born prematurely on July 20th, 1909 at 2 p.m. 15 min. in a private clinic from Monte Carlo. His/her father, journalist, make him follow secondary studies in a boarding school for young girls, in Marseilles, and the gratifie of a severe education. It follows courses of piano and horsemanship. His/her parents settle then in Paris, hoping to leave their financial problems.
Forced to earn its living, she works a time as saleswoman, then she is recruited as secretary by the Patou dressmaker. She quickly becomes her leading fashion model haute couture. The scenario writer Maurice Cammage would have discovered it in 1932 and a small role in " would have entrusted to him; Live the class! " , small film become untraceable, and with the credits of which the name of Mireille Balin is absent. More surely this is the realizer Jean de Limur who announces it to G. - W. Pabst by engaging it for the French version of his trilogy " Don Quichotte " , where it incarnates the niece at the sides of famous low Russian Fédor Chaliapine. Its cinematographic career is thus launched. One at that time sees it at the sides of the young boxer wonder Young Perez.
Claude Moulins offers an important role in " to him; Live the compagnie" , film which obtains a nice success. In 1933, it is essential in " The sex faible" of Robert Siodmak, at the sides of the Pierre Brasseur, Victor Butcher, Betty Stockfeld and Marguerite Moreno. Then, it appears in " Good-bye beautiful the jours" of Andre Beucler, near the high-speed motorboats Brigitte Helm and Jean Gabin. In 1934, in " A woman nue" was found; , of Léo Joannon, it holds the first role, as a young lady burying her life of young girl who, abandoned naked in the street, takes refuge inopportunely in her husband-to-be that it does not know. At the beginning of 1935, it plays the woman ridiculed in " Marie of the angoisses" , of Michel Bernheim, with Pierre Dux and Francoise Rosay, then the woman maintained in " The Novel of a spahi" , always of the same scenario writer.
Parisian the pimpante of Pépé Moko
In 1936, Mireille Balin has a short connection with Jean Gabin. Julien Duvivier then entrusts to him the role of Gaby in Pépé Moko . Its beauty and its freshness of Parisian pimpante slice admirably with the narrow and dark lanes of the Casbah of Algiers, thoroughly reconstituted in studio by Duvivier. In a final scene of anthology, Pépé/Jean Gabin, although handcuffed and framed police officers, manages to commit suicide of a stab in the belly, while Gaby/Mireille Balin, after having awaited his/her lover vainly, only with the prow of the boat leaving the wearing of Algiers, embraces the Kasbah of a last glance which does not manage to cross that, desperate, of Pépé. The film is a great success.
Jean Grémillon chooses it then to hold the role of the Vamp in Gueule of love , according to the novel of Andre Beucler, on a scenario of Charles Spaak. Mireille Balin connects, in 1937, with Naples with the kiss of fire of Augusto Genina, at the sides of Tino Rossi, Michel Simon, Viviane Romance, two enormous successes with the boxoffice. At the end of 1937, Mireille Balin signs a contract with the firm MGM and leaves for the United States. But, in conflict with the American producers, it takes again the boat for France with her new companion, Tino Rossi.
Of return to Paris, Mireille Balin will turn in particular Menaces , of Edmond T. Gréville, where she camps a mannequin at the sides of Erich Von Stroheim, John Loder, Ginette Leclerc. The film, prohibited and burned during the Occupation, will be restored and distributed to the Libération. Macao , of Jean Delannoy, will be also prohibited by the occupant in June 1940, because of presence of Von Stroheim, Autrichien of origin and notorious anti-nazi. It will leave two years later with a new title ( the Hell of the play ) and amputee the scenes turned with Von Stroheim, replaced by Pierre Renoir.
Descent into Hell
At the beginning of 1940, Mireille Balin is on the plates of Cinecittà for " Juniors by Alcazar" of Augusto Genina, resolutely pro-pro-Franco film, and which will count in the serious difficultieies that it will have with the Release. During the " Funny of war " , it takes part in receptioies for charity for the prisoners of war. In 1941, its connection with Tino Rossi ends.
During the Occupation, it still makes some films, of which " The assassin is afraid the nuit" , of Jean Delannoy, " The last atout" , of Jacques Becker and " High the vent" , of Jacques de Baroncelli. Éprise de Birl Desbok, young officer Viennese of the Wehrmacht, Mireille Balin will not escape the lightnings from the Epuration.
In September 1944, stopped with him by FFI with Beausoleil, whereas the couple tries to pass to Italy, it is beaten and violated, then imprisoned with Nice. No one does not know what it is occurred of Birl Desbok, undoubtedly carried out during its arrest. Mireille Balin will be transferred then to Fresnes. In front of the court, one reproaches him his connection, his participation in the turning of the film " Juniors by Alcazar" , and with the artistic official receptions of the embassy from Germany to Paris. It will be released in January 1945.
Its life, its career and its health are broken. Its old relations avoid it. The public, which admired it without liking it in its roles of femme fatale inevitably little sympathetic nerve, is also diverted. In spite of an ultimate attempt, " The last chevauchée" , of Leon Mathot, Mireille Balin turns over to the lapse of memory on the Riviera. In a complete destitution, marked physically by the disease (meningitis, typhus, alcoholism…), it goes back to Paris in 1957. Catch of load by association " The wheel tourne" (work of assistance to the artists in the need rested by Paul Azaïs and its partner Janalla Jarnach), she dies in 59 years on November 9th, 1968, 5:30 of the morning, the hospital Beaujon, in anonymity and poverty.
" The wheel tourne" he avoid the common grave: it is buried with the Cimetière of Saint-Ouen square 21, dividing later its vault with Jean Tissier, another actor deceased in misery. Their burial is flowered at each All Saints' day by association. At the time of his burial, one placed in his coffin, says one, a small teddy bear offered by Tino Rossi.
Noticed loves
At least five connections are known to him:
- the boxer flyweight Victor Younki, known as Young Perez, younger French world champion, born on January 15th, 1911 in the Jewish district of " Hara" with Tunis, off-set like Jew, killed during the evacuation of the camp of Auschwitz.
- Raymond Patenotre, deputy, minister and press baron. It covered it jewels, but she always refused to marry…
- Jean Gabin: if their relation were transitory, their duet in Pépé Moko remained legendary…
- Tino Rossi: a great passion ignited these two beings, without taking them along until the marriage. They were left in September 1941.
- Birl Desbok, officer in Wehrmacht: his/her last companion accompanied it in his tragic escape.
