History

The tradition reports that the bishop of holy Calame Possidius (or Possidonius), disciple of Augustin saint, driven out of Africa by the invasions vandals, came to take refuge in Mirandole where he died in the 5th century.

The small town of Mirandola, in the past " Mirandole" , is on a strategic site on the road from Germany in Rome, which explains its importance during the centuries.

Jean Pic of Mirandole was one of the lords of the city at the end of the 15th century. One of its descendants, Galeotto, following a criminal case had to take refuge at the court of François Ier. This one helped it financially to build a fortress and ramparts around the city.

Mirandola played a big role when Henri II opposed Charles Quint and with the pope Jules III during the war of Parma.

The city supported, between the summer 1551 and spring 1552, the seat of three thousand soldiers of the pope and the emperor. The troops of Mirandola had at their head the count Ludovic Pico, the general Florentin Pietro Strozzi and some gentilhommes French.

The pope gave up the seat when its nephew, Giovanni Batista di Monte, to which he would have liked to give Parma, was killed.
