Origin

It belongs to the races deer of the Iberian peninsula. It comes from the District of Bragance. In 1870, it occupied the majority the top Alentejo, ensuring the production of meat and the agricultural work. In first half of the 20th century, its expansion led it in all Alentejo like animal of work, with the detriment of the less rustic Alentejana. In second half of the 20th century, manpower decreased with the mechanization of the campaigns, the crossings and competition of heavy races and at high-speed of growth: Charolaise and Limousine. In 1970, it had almost disappeared. A protection plan is in the course of installation.

Morphology

It wears a more or less dark dress chatain, with a more constant pigmentation in the male on the head, the garrot, the belly and the back train. The horns are short on a broad, high nape of the neck and prohéminente.

It is a race of intermediate size with 125-135 cm.

Aptitudes

It is a sharp but flexible race (selected for work) which provides a meat of quality. The cows produce enough milk to raise two calves the first months, but the production is dried up quickly.
