Account
In 1130, Hugonel, young Germanic pilgrim on the way with his parents towards Saint-Jacques-with-Compostelle, spent the night in an inn of Santo Domingo of Calzada. A young maidservant made him advances, which it pushed back. Gotten rid of, it hid in its luggage of the money crockery. At the time of the departure, she showed it flight of the dish. He was condemned and hung for this flight which he had not made. The éplorés parents continued their pilgrimage and requested holy Jacques. On their return of Compostelle, they intended it to tell them top of the gibet which he lived, because holy Jacques protected it. Filled with wonder, they were addressed to the Alcalde, (of Arabic Al cadi: the judge) who was tasting a roasted cock and a hen, answered them with irony: “If your son is alive, this hen and this cock will start to sing in my plate. ” what it occurred, the cock sang and the hen caqueta. The upset alcalde made depend the young man and hang in his place the faulty one.
Devotion
Since the 14th century, a hen and a cock white (changed regularly!) live inside the Cathédrale of Santo Domingo of Calzada, in a beautiful Gothic hen house, with the great astonishment of the tourists who do not know the history, and who, sometimes, ask where it is necessary to slip a part to make sing the automats.
The October 6th 1350, a bubble signed with Avignon grants Indulgence S to the pilgrims who request in front of the Relique S where the cock and the hen are. In any event, it is of good predicts to intend the cock to sing.
The cock and the hen are behind a worked grid, which prevents the pilgrims of from tearing off a feather as a relic today to them. This one is pleasantly given by the sexton of Santo Domingo. Consequently, in addition to the Scallop, the pilgrim carries also the feather of hen or the cock.
The chains of the prisoner and the beam of the gibet are suspended on the walls of the cathedral. They commemorate surprising it miracle. This legend is evoked on quantity of Retable S so much in France (for example with Cotdoussan or Prelles in Hautes-Alpes) that in Switzerland or Germany (Jakobskirche de Rothenburg).
