Minority Language
A minority language is a spoken language by linguistic minorities '' '', national or ethnic , in a given country. Thus cases of French in the Valley of Aoste, of the Catalan in France. They are also called minorized languages, indigenous S, Indigène S, Aborigène S. In certain countries, in particular in the majority of the countries of Europe (other than the France ¹), but also in Canada and in the South Africa according to the Apartheid, of the laws a definition and a statute private individuals grant to such languages.
In France ¹ they are generally called regional languages . The reason is that the French State recognizes the Régions, but not the Minorité S, which are protected by international texts emanating from UNO and UNESCO concerning the linguistic minorities and others, and rights of these minorities. Paradoxically, France supports the French-speaking minorities abroad: “Lives free Quebec! ”, French colleges with teaching by immersion and personnel lent by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, in particular with the the Alliance Fran1caise,…
One can note the example of the official recognition, even if the statutes are not exactly equivalent:
- of the Welsh, the Cornique, the Scottish Gaelic with the the United Kingdom
- of the Catalan , the Galician , the Basque, but also of the Aragonese and the Occitan in Spain
- of the French to the Canada, thanks to the Law on the official languages and the article 16 of the Canadian Charter of the rights and freedoms .
- of the Sorabe, the Danish, the Clippings, the Low-German ( Plattdüütsch ) and of the Rromani in Germany
- of the French, the Spanish , the Hawaien, the Chamorro, the Samoan and the Carolinien to the the United States of America (cf the Languages in the United States of America versus the English-only movement )
