In 2054, the town of Washington made a success of with éradiquer the crime. Thanks to the visions of the future provided by three individuals Précognitif S, the agents of Précrime can écrouer the criminals right before they committed their crimes. But one day, the agent John Anderton receives précogs a vision relating to it: in less than 36 hours, he will have assassinated a man whom he does not know yet and for a reason that he is unaware of. Shocked, it escapes then, continued by its own fellow-members who have the role of stopping it in accordance with the system…
Complete summary
The film is held with Washington in 2054. It opens on John Anderton, agent of the governmental organization Précrime . Its team is trying to apprehend a suspect. In this sequence, one discovers that at that time one manages to predict the crimes using précogs (abbreviation of Précognitif S, “which have the capacity to see the future”): three human in a state of damning up, preserved in the middle of the head office of Précrime, provides the hour of the misdeed, the name of the attacker and the name of the victim. All the other aspects of the crime can be obtained only by deciphering thin indices in the images relayed by the précogs. Those are visions of the future surrounding the moment of the crime and are transferred in a data-processing sytème thanks to which Anderton handles the images through an interface of Virtual reality. Thus, he seeks where take place the crimes and other useful informations before intervening.During this handling, Anderton is observed by Danny Witwer, an agent of the Ministère of Justice sent to assess the system because the American soon will be consulted by Référendum to extend to all the country the Précrime program, only used in Washington.
After the intervention and the placement in a state of damning up of the pre-criminal, Anderton turns over in his apartment and looks at there holographic vidéos of his/her six year old son. It becomes obvious, in the spirit of the spectator, that this one is deceased and that the agent is now divorced.
The next morning, Witwer visits the room where the three précogs rest in a basin filled with a translucent substance. A technician explains to him that this one helps to relay the images that the précogs produce. Anderton, in withdrawal, is apostrophized by one of the précogs, Agatha, which emerges from water and shows him images of a woman being assassinated. Intrigued never not to have seen these images, Anderton inquires. It views the recordings.
The images of both others précogs are recorded, they-Ci do not show a murder. Those of Agatha, which is a priori most reliable of the trio, disappeared. Anderton then warns the person in charge of the anti-criminal cell of Washington, Lamar Burgess, which does not appear concerned. The agent thus turns over to its work.
A murder will take place in thirty-six hours. Anderton recovers the name of the murderer, who is not other than it his. Knowing that it obviously will be captured, it flees. He manages to sow the team of Witwer in a factory of cars and to take refuge in the house of Iris Hindeman, pionnière of Précrime with Lamar. The old woman reveals to him that it happens that a précog has a vision of the future different from that of his/her comrades but that, by preoccupation with a reliability, the system excludes the unmatched vision then. However, a trace of this vision remains present in the spirit of Agatha, strongest of the précogs. Put at the current of this secrecy up to now known of only Lamar and Iris, Anderton then sees its only chance to prove its innocence by recovering possible “a minority report/ratio” which, if there had been of it one during the prediction relating to it, would have been ignored by the system.
In 2054, it is difficult to move incognito because all the people are subjected to retinal scanners (for the personalization of the advertisements audios for example). To escape any identification, Anderton will be made transplant new eyes in an abstract surgeon. Whereas he sleeps to recover operation time that its Clerc's Offices take, the agent dreams of a memory: it is learned whereas his/her son was kidnapped. It awakes and discovers that agents of Précrime are excavating the building where it is. In search of her fugitive, the team on the spot deploys spyders , small robot-like spiders charged with scanner the eyes of the idlers and inhabitants. Arrived in Anderton, those seek to identify it but, because of surgical operation, do not recognize it.
Anderton goes then to Précrime where it manages to penetrate, while placing in front of the multiple scanners of retinal identification its old eyes which it preserved. Arrived in the middle of the building, it leaves Agatha its basin, thus disconnecting the network trial from précogs which makes function Précrime. He escapes by embarking with him the précognitive one, and will find one as of his friends Hacker who scanne memory of Agatha: Anderton reaches thus the vision of the murder which it is supposed to make. However, the vision is identical to that which had been selected by the system: there does not exist “minority report/ratio” for its case.
Anderton thus leaves to research its potential victim, Leo Crow, which is absent from its apartment. By excavating this last, Anderton finds quantities of photographs of children scattered and, among them, some of his/her son. The idea that there is not a “minority report/ratio” for its crime affirms: it always premeditated the death of the kidnapper of its son if ever it found it, and Leo Crow proves to be this one. It thus decides to kill it.
Summoned by Agatha to reflect, Anderton reconsiders its desire of murder and simply decides to stop Crow. He announces his Droits Miranda to him. At this point in time Crow announces that if it is not killed, its family will have nothing . Anderton understands that all that was thus a setting in scene. Crow manages to hang the gun of Anderton and Suicide by interposed police force while pressing on the hand of the agent. Anderton and Agatha leave the apartment then.
Witwer and the Précrime unit arrive on the spot and study the scene of crime. Witwer analyzes the widespread photographs and becomes very skeptic: the cases of orgy of evidence as this one are far from probable. It thus will see Lamar Burgess and maintains it its doubts. It shows him the reports/ratios on the murder of the woman: the “minority report/ratio” of Agatha and the majority report/ratio of both others précogs. There are differences which tend to prove that the two visions do not date from the same moment: the murder being made close to a lake, one can notice that from one version to another, the undulations of water do not go in the same direction. At this moment, Burgess kills Witwer, without apparent reasons. Précrime could not predict this murder in the absence of Agatha.
Anderton took refuge in the house of its ex-wife Lara and it includes/understands why it is the object of handling: the woman of which he saw the murder is not other than the mother of Agatha. This one tried to recover his/her daughter, used like précog; one thus assassinated it for the good of the program.
The police force intervenes and stops Anderton. Later, Lara discusses with Burgess about the woman and understands that it is him which was the murderer. She thus will release Anderton, placed in damning up. They go to a conference given by Burgess and confront it with its crime. Burgess leaves its gun and threatens Anderton before committing suicide for the good of the program.
In the final sequence, Anderton explains why the Précrime experiment is stopped and that all the précriminels were released without conditions. The précogs were put at the secrecy and live a normal life. Anderton was reconciled with Lara which is pregnant…

Distribution
The distribution of the roles initially envisaged was partly re-examined following the delays taken by the turning of film. That marks the first collaboration of the two men who had envisaged to work together as of their first meeting in 1983, at the time of Risky Business , the minority news Rapport of Philip K. Dick was to be adapted so as to become a continuation of the film Total Recall of Paul Verhoeven, which was already an adaptation of a news of the author without another relationship with this one. This scenario was to be created by the scenario writers Ronald Shusett, Gary Goldman and, arrived later on the project, Robert Goethals. So the history was to be delocalized on Mars where the précogs would have been people transferred by the Martian atmosphere, central problem of first film. The main character, John Anderton, also would have been substituted for that of Douglas Quaid, hero of first film, are played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. The project was cancelled but the scenario writers, always holders of the rights of the news, rewrote the scenario by removing any reference to Total Recall . It is a priori at the time when the scenario writer Jon Cohen was engaged, in 1997, which this preceding scenario was spent on side and completely réimaginé.
The project Cruise/Spielberg
It is in 1998 that Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise joins the project Minority Report and announces that it will be about a coproduction between the 20th Century Fox, the company of Spielberg (DreamWorks SKG), that of Cruise (Cruise/Wagner Productions) and that of Jan de Bont (Blue Tulip). The production is then spread out over several years. Turning was envisaged once that of the film Mission: Impossible II with completed Cruise.
Shade of large realizers
Then, the death of the friend of Steven Spielberg, Stanley Kubrick, has constrained the realizer to finish the project of this last, AD INTERIM: Artificial intelligence , thus deferring Minority Carryforward . Tom Cruise having worked on last film of this last, Eyes Wide Shut , the shade of Kubrick could not plane on film. One can thus see in film right after Cruise had finished the turning of Vanilla Sky . Steven Spielberg thinks that it is the first composition of Williams for one of his films which is " in black and blanc" , One of the principal questions is thus: “is the future written or the free-referee, the choices, can it modify this one? ”. This one is also discussed through the question of the accuracy of the vision of the précogs, and negative. One also can, like the Books of the cinema, to see an interrogation on the concept of “zero tolerance” of the era post- Giuliani.
Between near future and retrofuturism
Minority Report is a film of Anticipation which composes at the same time with elements of a Dystopie and of a Utopie. The film delivers a vision of the near future more precisely described than in the news of which it is adapted. To create a credible near future, Steven Spielberg, in 1999, invited fifteen expert of the Total Business Network, its president Peter Schwartz, the founder of Wired Kevin Kelly and the demographer and journalist Joel Garreau in a hotel of Santa Monica. They made there a Brainstorming to think in detail of what would resemble the world of 2054. Among the experts, one could count Steward Brand, Peter Calthrope, Douglas Coupland, the professor in the Media Lab of the MIT Neil Gershenfeld, the researcher in biomedecine of the DARPA Shaun Jones, one of the inventors of the Virtual reality Jaron Lanier, the automobile designer Harald Belker (which had worked on XXx and Armagedon ) and the former senior of the school of architecture of the MIT William J. Mitchell. The discussions did not change the key elements which the sequences of action of film needed, but nevertheless influenced the utopian aspects of film. John Underkoffler, the scientific and technological adviser of film, described with final this one like " grayer and more ambigu" that what they had provided in 1999.From a stylistic point of view, Minority Report can make think of AD INTERIM: Artificial intelligence , preceding film carried out by Steven Spielberg, more than with E.T extraterrestrial the , another science fiction film reference of this one. The film is voluntarily suréclairé and during the Post-production, a Procédé without bleaching ( bleach bypass ) was used. That gives to film a particular aspect, with really désaturées colors. One would say almost a Film in black and white owing to the fact that tons them black and the shades are very marked. According to Spielberg itself, the music returns to the Black films of the time of Humphrey Bogart and John Huston. Here a table summarizing some of the results recorded with the Boxoffice by country:
It had very as much success on the market of the video, with at least four million DVD sold at the time of the first months of diffusion.

In France, the very large majority of criticisms is conquered.
