Minihi
Minihi (or Minihy ) is word Breton which derives from Latin monachia (itself dissociated of the Greek). Étymologiquement, it indicates a “monastic territory”.
Presentation
In Brittany, with the the Middle Ages, this institution meets only in the zones which were, durably or not, Breton-speaking. It is a religious district which associates with the Right of asylum a certain number of exemptions and franknesses with respect to the laic capacities. The minihi is thus at the same time an asylum and an immunity.
Quotation
Ernest Renan writes in Souvenirs of childhood and youth :-
“a circle crowned of one or two miles, which one called the minihi, surrounded the monastery and enjoyed most invaluable immunities. ”
