Minhota

The minhota or galega is a bovine race Portuguese.

Origin

It belongs to the fair Rameau and red and draws its name from the under-area of Minho-Lima. It is a close relationship of the Spanish Rubia Gallega from which it draws its second name. It would be at the origin of the large race Ramo exported with the the Azores shortly after their discovery. It results from the fusion of three old subraces. One among it provided kait for local cheese-making manufacture. The stockbreeders of these three races provided oxen drawn up to work under the yoke for the agricultural work and the traction of carriages. They were fattened for their meat with their reform. It is a still high race " with the ancienne" , but a work of selection could develop its qualities, like Spanish did it for the rubia Gallega. These last years, following the consecutive shortage with the crisis of the ESB, export towards the the United Kingdom cause a drop in manpower. They are of the 6800 cows and 76 bulls.

Morphology

It wears a dress clear wheat to deer. The mucous membranes are clear and the short horns while growing forwards.
Elle is of intermediate size: 130 cm for 550 kg in the cow and 140 cm for 850 kg in the bull. It has a muscular but elegant silhouette.

Aptitudes

It is a race raised in the past for its labor force, now reconverted towards the production of meat.
C' is a rustic and flexible race. The cow is a good mother. She vèle easily, raises well her calf thanks to her rich milk and profits from a good longevity.
