Mineral Water
The Eau X of drink intended for human consumption answer various names, water of table , spring waters , mineral water .
The water distributed to the tap answers the strict lawful criteria of the Drinking water. Various the water of table rigorously of comparable nature, but is marketed in bottles. The spring waters also but the additional requirement to be naturally in conformity and thus not to have undergone any chemical treatment.
The mineral water are different natures. They are not drinkable with the lawful direction (one could not distribute them to the tap). Indeed, they contain mineral substances in too large quantities to be able to be used as exclusive drink. They are the subject thus of specific authorizations, after analysis of their therapeutic effects.
The mineral water often presents important contents of Magnésium, generally low contents of Nitrate S. Their Dureté in Calcium is very variable. Their interest comes from the presence of rarer substances like the Fluor or from the Oligo-élément S.
Generally the mineral water is the subject also of a thermal exploitation .
Legal definitions
- a natural mineral water is a water of underground origin, protected from any pollution. Its chemical characteristics must be stable. It must be likely to bring its properties favorable to health .
- a spring water is a water of underground origin, having undergone a protection against pollution, and not having undergone neither treatment, nor addition. It must satisfy the criteria of potability (what is not inevitably the case of a natural water mineral)
- a water of table is a drinking water, having undergone a possible treatment.
- the mineral water is the water which has the highest rate of mineralization

Three types of mineral water

Why is bottled water drunk? According to the Parliamentary office of validation of the scientific and technological choices: “ For various reasons holding with the taste of tap water, the distrust with respect to its quality, but also with the mode, the effects of a subtle marketing proposing the natural side of the product and of a powerful publicity. ”

In 2003, the consumption of bottled water developed a little, because of heat wave of the summer. For 2004, the level of consumption “ of plain waters, punts and gas ” should return on the level of that of 2002, according to the survey firm Marketing TNS Secodip.

- the segment which progresses at high speed, is that of aromatized water, and it is that also where the industrialists launched the most innovation these last years, and its consumption (at least a bottle per annum) relates to today a third of the hearths against a quarter two years ago.
- the French market is dominated by three great groups which add up 80% of the sales in value:
- Nestlé Toilets (Swiss) with Perrier, Vittel, Contrex, Aquarel…
- Danone (France) with Evian, Volvic…
- Neptune (France) with Crystalline, Saint-Yorre…
- the sector of the water bottles of more than 10 liters, which is very snuffed with the the United States (35% of the market) in the companies, the shopping malls and even at the private individuals where they are delivered, is still marginal in Europe (3% of the market) but grows of 15% per annum.
