Minas is a town of Uruguay, capital of the department of Lavalleja. Its population is of: 37149 inhabitants. It shelters the largest statue of Cheval, that of the general Jose Artigas in commemoration of this chief of the 19th siècle.
It is the birthplace of the Général Juan Antonio Lavalleja; for this reason, it has also an equestrian statue of Lavalleja.
History
The city was founded in 1783, when a big number of emigrants of areas of the Asturies and Galicia settled in Uruguay. Its name was then Villa of Concepción of mow Minas .
