History

Before Mineapolis

Before second half of the 19th century, the history of Mineapolis is closely related to that of the Sioux, tribe of Amerindian which occupied in the beginning its territory well before the arrival of the first Européens in the Années 1680, of which the father Louis Hennepin who, elected by the France, was the first to explore the area.

Since this time, the area of Mineapolis belonged successively to several European countries before integrating the American territory later. The seizure of France on this territory began as of 1680 after the forwarding of Louis Hennepin. Following the treated of Paris rising from the Seven Year old War in 1763, the zone of the current Minnesota to the western of the Mississippi and the south of the Hudson Bay was yielded to the Spain. Belonging to the News-France, the western territory of Mineapolis briefly returned under French control in 1803 before being integrated definitively in the the United States following the Vente of Louisiana. The part of the city located at the east of the Mississippi was transferred to the England also at the conclusion of the treaty of Paris of 1763. This portion of ground, which shelters part of Minnesota, but also of Mineapolis, was given to the United States after the independence of the country.

In the objective to sit its authority in the west of the United States of the time, the American armed builds the Fort Snelling on a territory bought with the Sioux in 1805. This ground which the fort occupied as of its construction in 1819 corresponds today to the totality of Mineapolis and half of Saint Paul.

The extremely allowed the monitoring of the Confluent of the Mississippi and Minnesota. The safety zone under its control was interdict with any civil establishment. It is only in 1850 that the very first not-soldier was authorized to settle there, it acted of John H. Stevens which had obtained this right in exchange of its offer of a service of vat through the rivers to extremely connect the to the commune close to Saint Anthony. Symbolically, it can be regarded as the first resident of the occupied territory today by Mineapolis. A little later in 1852, the president Millard Fillmore approved an act of the Congrès granting a reduction of surface under protection of Strong Snelling, then opening the part in the west of the river to the civil establishments. The same year, was created the Comté of Hennepin named in the honor of the father Louis Hennepin who discovered it.

Birth of the city

Although there is then still no commune in the west of the Chutes of Saint Anthony, the first commission of the Comté of Hennepin chooses this site like sits of the county of Hennepin. Several names were proposed for the new place, the selected first was “Albion”. However vis-a-vis certain reserves, other names were put thereafter in competition. It is finally “Mineapolis” which will be retained after a professor of school proposed “Minnehapolis” with the St Anthony Express , local Journal which published the idea the November 5th 1852 which was adopted one week later.

Mineapolis was regarded as a Ville as of 1856 by the territorial legislation of the Minnesota ( Minnesota Territorial Legislature ). In 1867, Dorilus Morrison was elected as a first Maire of the city. A long time put outstanding, the fusion of St Anthony with Mineapolis was carried out only in 1872 after the Agglomération quickly developed following the American Civil War.

The River running in direction of south-east, the original construction of the Ville was parallel to made the River in order to maximize the quantity of ground which could be employed. The later growth of Mineapolis was made with the realization of street S mainly in the Northern directions - Southern/Is - western, thus involving the birth of many intersections (most famous is probably that of the “seven corners” ( seven corners in English), on the periphery is Center-ville).

This event contributed all the same to a relative awakening of the inhabitants and leaders concerning the safeguarding of the inheritance of their city.

Although it was never official, the Racial segregation was frequent between blacks and white. Today, certain problems still persist although a programme of desegregation in education was engaged as of 1972.
