Mimeure

Mimeure is a common French, located in the department of the Coast-with Or and the area Burgundy.

The territory of the commune of Mimeure has limits well defined since long years. In North, communes of Clomot (with height of the Water of Beaune) and of the Festival; in the East the communes of Musigny and Foissy define the borders of them, in the West the commune of Jouey, and finally, in the South, the commune of Arnay-the-Duke.

In addition, the grounds of this commune are rather broken. In the North-East, one meets the vast plate of Thoreille which occupies all the part of the territory located between the hamlet of Thoreille and the fining of Musigny. From this plate are detached in the direction from the North-East in south-east the hills from wood from the Well, of Garenne or Tronçois, the hills of Contaut, Solonge or the Oak to the Coward and Buissenaye. Thus, these nipples are located between several commes or combes. The North-western end of the territory includes/understands the slope east coast of the plate of Grandées or Treney, located on the fining of Jouey.

From a geological point of view, the basement of the upper part of the plate of Thoreille and all the hills which are detached some is formed by limestones of lias (limestones with Gryphées and Lumachelles). In the slope of the hills, one meets the marl and the sandstone of infra-lias like several layers of Argile suitable for the manufacture of the tile. The small valleys contain marnes, sandstones, sorted and of the granite. There exists only of weak outcrops of marnes iridescent on this territory, but the sandstones of sorted reach in several places a rather great thickness. There is of it very good quality for constructions. In particular, the bridges of Arnay-the-Duke were built in 1778 with sandstones coming from Mimeure and Saint-Price. Mimeure has a rather good ground for the culture of cereals. Its meadows are of good quality.

The territory of Mimeure is included/understood in the basin of the Arroux. The north-eastern part is crossed by the river Solonge which comes from the pond of the Festival; it runs north in south-west. This river fed the pond of the Water of Beaune, the locks of Solonge and Bolt which were used as level with the of the same mills names. The river of Solonge receives on the right the river of Clomot and Promenois; on the left, the small brook of Large the Court, Prâlots, like Bollard, Flacelière, pre Chaponnot and the fountain Collapse-Bottom. Except for the river of Clomot and brook of Promenois, all these small brooks have their source on the territory of Mimeure. In the slope of the Arroux itself, one meets the brook of Mimeure which has its origin with the fountain of Pierraillouse, on the territory of Musigny, and which pours its water in Arroux with Arnay-the-Duke, while passing by the village of Mimeure. The brook of Thoreille, between Garenne and the wood of the Well, pours its water in the Fouchey pond. Finally the brook of Ravery, formed by the meeting of two small rivers of which one originates in the fountain of Ravery with Thoreille and the second a fountain located on western bank of the wood communal of Thoreille, pours its water in the Barrot pond.

Many things to be said but information are available on Internet site of the commune of Mimeure:

Hamlets

Solonge:

The hamlet of Solonge (Salonge in 1396) depended in the past on the Seigniory of Musigny. It is less important than Thoreille. This village is sirué in the North-West of Mimeure, on the slope of left of the valley of Sollonge. Formerly, it was a village " badly built but enough propre". The district known as of Prâlots is located at 500 Mr. in the south of the principal village; this district extends until worms the mill, known as mill of Solonge, about which we will speak a little further.

- Thoreille:

The hamlet of Thoreille (Toraillis in 1213) is located at the east of Mimeure in top and on the slope of right-hand side of the small small valley known as of the pond of cat, which pours its water in the Barrot pond on the territory of Arnay-the-Duke. " Thoreille is a rather important village but it is badly built; its streets are malpropres" , known as a document of formerly. It is sometimes true still today. On the origin of this name of Thoreille or Thorey of which the root is frequent in Burgundy, erudite people allot it to the many establishments German Barbarians (the Burgondes) come on other side of the Rhine. One their gods was Tor or Thor, god of the war, wire of Odin, etc… (Cf the Burgondes establishments enters the Seine and the Rhone).

Administration

The church

The Contaut Vault

The bell of the Contaut vault (smallest) was brought in the bell-tower of the Church in 1790 and the largest date of 1825. In old notes of Mr. Bougenot, it is pointed out that the cross out of wooden was covered with slate in plates. On the Contaut vault, one can say that Mongin II Contaut (only sons of Mongin Contaut) was buried saturdays July 18th 1534. The vault is under the term of the design of Notre-Dame and Saint-Jerome. This vault is in rectangle which is internally 14 meters long on 7 broad; the walls have an average thickness of 0,80 Mr.; the vault in the full center is in grass, its rise with the key above the ground the vault is of 6 m.80. This vault is divided into three spans by veins with throat maintained outside by means of eight buttresses, and internally they put back on cylindrical semi-columns of 0,40 Mr. diameter out of stone of size without capital nor cornices. Two side openings in north have outside 2 m.40 top on 0,85 Mr. broad, and the large windows in the pinions, have outside 1m.80 the broad one and on 2m.50 top. All these windows are ogival and without pieces. The principal door of entry in 3 centers (handle of basket) is decorated of a roll in simple torus. The bell-tower which was destroyed in 1790 was out of wood, it had the same form as that of the church of Mimeure, but it was smaller, and the arrow was less low; this bell-tower was located on the medium of the first span, while entering the vault. With the front and the vault exists a dwelling house made up of two rooms, one at the ground floor and the other with the first and single stage with attic above; a small cellar existed under the stone staircase builds outside; then a furnace giving in the room to the ground floor. To rough-hew was built in appendix against the southern part of the vault beside the sacristy also built in appendix, on the door external of the sacristy, and on that which gives access of the sacristy to the vault, is the escutcheon of the Contaut family, which carries: of azure to the gold fasce, accompanied by three gold besans as a chief of an of the same shell at a peak. This dwelling was that of the hermit or monk who served the vault, later it was nothing any more but one foot with ground for the priest who came from time to time officer in this vault. This house was then inhabited by a guard. All constructions are located in a field surrounded by an empty hedge and a capacity of four newspapers (approximately one hectare), limited to north by the way of Flacelière with Mimeure, from where is detached with some steps in the west, the way of Contaut with Arnay-the-Duke by the Rough grazing with the King. In this field and with 20 meters in the east of the dwelling house exists an abundant fountain surrounded by a hedge, this fountain is re-elected by the good quality of its water. With the Revolution, buildings and enclosures were sold like national goods in Dijon the March 3rd 1792 to Mr. Laligant; currently (? ), this property belongs to the field pertaining to Mr. Michon Martin, owner in the autunois. Then Pernet, then became the possession of Jean Gras, farm owner with Mimeure starting from 1913. About the year 1800, the dwelling house of Contaut was rented by the guard private individual of the wood of Mr. Lhomme located on the communes of Mimeure, Foissy, Culêtre, four guard private individuals successively lived this house until in 1874 (the first guard private individual Mr. Chandelier lived Contaut of 1800 with 1816, second Mr. Consvaux of 1816 with 1838, then Mr. Bœuf of 1840 with 1856, and finally Mr. Berthaut of 1856 with 1874. For this time, the house of Contaut has not been inhabited any more, and all the buildings are touched ruins. The vault of Contaut failed to be completely destroyed 7 or 8 of November 1885. A fire due to the ill will of a vagrant according to the ones, or to the imprudence of a farmer according to the others, whose fodder was consumed inside the vault. The brick vault was lézardée so much so that the demolition was considered to be essential. The interior coating of the walls was seriously reached and the roof was completely destroyed. This roof was remade, and the coating of the walls was well repaired but private of its beautiful vault, of its interior coatings out of mortar of lime and flock, and the more share of its doors, and windows which one walled, this building lost all its value, all its architectural seal. Indeed, this old construction following this disaster is more currently only the skeleton of the pretty vault built by Mongin Contaut and Bernarde of the Bars, his wife, in 1520. Before 1789, the enclosure of Contaut was cultivated only in front of the dwelling house. To the fountain, it was the garden. The remainder was planted, a part in vine, the other, the greatest part, was furnished with fruit trees, hedges, and trees of approval. It is in this last part that the contribution was held. Monday of Easter, the merchants travelling, of the plays, and the installation of a place of dance, settled there and arrived from there youth arnétoise, and those of the close villages. This feastday formerly attracted in Contaut a large crowd attracted for the greatest number by the entertainments which this festival offered, while others did not come in this place this day there, that in pilgrimage to attend the celebrated offices of the priests of Arnay-the-Duke. The pilgrims never forgot to carry each one a bottle of the water of the fountain. This bottle then enjoyed the reputation to cure the evils of eyes, the scrofula, and to cut the fever. This contribution was held until in 1788. This year there, an accident put for always fine at this festival. The Easter Monday 1788, by sounding the bell to announce the hour of vespers, named the Adhesive, bell ringer of bell with Arnay-the-Duke engaged the cord of the bell in an open joint of the stone framework of size of the circular opening of the bell-tower, on the level of the veins of the vault of the vault, shook this stone of size, and made it fall on him, it was crushed and its death was instantaneous. Then, painfully impressed crowd gave up this place of rejoicing, where it was not to meet any more in the future. Indeed, the Revolution arrived one year afterwards, Contaut was declared quite national and was sold the March 3rd 1792. In remembering the festival of Contaut, the arnétois took the practice to go as a crowd in Mimeure the Easter Monday, formerly to roll of dyed eggs, and maintaining to spend one day to the inn, and to dance. The Easter Monday was not the only feastday celebrated annually in Contaut. The first day of the Rogations, Contaut was the goal of the procession of Arnay-the-Duke to which came to join that of Mimeure. This day there, a true pastoral festival as to celebrate the return of the spring place with Contaut had, the assistants which was always in great number, then the priests all, carried what to regale themselves merrily. A report and in support of an account of the factory of St-Laurent of Arnay-the-Duke on June 14th 1634 gives the proof of it: Provided by Taquenet the sieurs fabricians for the time of Rogations 1° - sent to Contaut two parts of pastry making to 40 grounds, plus fresh butter, a two dozen eggs pound, and salt with bread for 25 grounds. It is seen that at the time of these popular holidays, our fathers could combine priesthood and pleasure. There exists with the wood of Bolt on the territory of Mimeure, a fountain located in a very picturesque place, not far from a pâquier, it is the fountain Croule Bottom, where unmemorable times, the arnétois at the time them marriages were going to drink of its water, to collate, then to jump and dance on the pâquier close to the fountain. From there his name, one says.

Tomb of Mongin II Contaut - In the Contaut vault

July 18th, 1534 - Died of Mongin Contaut lord of Mimeure - To advise at the Parliament of Burgundy. Its place of burial is quoted by Claude Courtépée and Paillot gives on this subject some small ignored information of the public. He is buried with the hermitage of Notre Dame in or on the justice of Mimeure under a high tomb of two feet and ground demy, on which are two figures out of work of approximately an inch which represent him and its wife with this inscription:

“Ci gîst honourable man and saige maistre Mongin Contault adviser of Roy our in his court of the Parliament and Dijon, lord of Mimeure which founded ceste vault in the honor of Nostre Dame and of St-Hiérome and trespassed on XIIX July MDCXXXIV - And damoiselle Bernarde of the Bars his wife, which trespassed V May millet five taxable quotas. request God for eulx. ”.

The vault or hermitage of Contaut was sold like national good in 1791, its ornaments which consisted of some statues disappeared - and its bell belongs today to the Church of Mimeure. All beside this monument existed a dwelling of the same time when one says resided the priest - detached this year of the priory St-Jacques d' Arnay for the religious services.

PS: Contaut were anoblis by Charles Bold the, in its states of the Flandres. The weapons have noble letters gone back to Brussels in November 1460.

Mills

- The mill of Solonge: The mill of Solonge located at 2400 meters downstream from the mill of the Water of Beaune was a rather important establishment when it was fed by the pond of Solonge, of a surface of 18 hectares 78 ares. This pond converted into pre since 1847 was famous by the quality of its fish. The mill of Solonge was then supplied by a small level of a surface of one hectare at the maximum. Water of the river Solonge was retained in this level by the roadway of the old pond in which there was a outfall in masonry 5 meters length and two dump valves of 1 m.10 broad on 0m.80 top. For an unmemorable time the mill of Solonge belonged to M.M. of Chaugy, counts de Roussillon, lords of Musigny and Solonge. Year 1772 this mill became the property of Mr. Montcimet de Musigny, then of Mr. Champy and his son-in-law Mr. Benoît Champy. Then, this mill belonged to Mr. Antoine Chalon of Eguilly which lived in Paris. It was bought after the War 1914-1918 by Misters Giboulot brothers. The mill of Solonge contained two pairs of grinding stones put moving by a waterwheel of 3 m.50 diameter; the fall of this factory was of 4 m.90.

- The mill of the Water of Beaune: The mill of the Water of Beaune is very old. It was close to this mill and those of Clomot and Solonge that place of the battle known as had most extremely of Arnay-the-Duke, between the catholics and the Protestants, June 27th and 28th 1570. At that time this mill belonged to the Priory of the Festival, with its fuller located at 1500 meters upstream. This fuller is destroyed for a long time. The mill of the Water of Beaune is located at 2200 meters downstream from the mill of the Festival, on the river of this name. This mill was supplied by the water of the river of the Festival, retained by a pond of the surface of approximately 7 hectares, by means of a roadway where existed a outfall in 7 meters length masonry and a winnowing of discharge made up of 5 one meter broad valves, on 1 m.20 top. This mill contained two pairs of grinding stones put moving by a waterwheel of 3 m.80 diameter. The fall of this mill is of 6 m.12. This mill belonged to the family Bonnard Villemeureux, then with Mr. Benoît Champy, then with his son-in-law Mr. Lambert Benoit Champy. Lastly, it was acquired at the 20th century by Lazare Pierre. This mill does not function any more since the beginning of the Great War. On origin of this name of Water of Beaune, indication interesting finds in book of Claude Courtépée (History of Burgundy - page of Clomot) where it is indicated that the seigniory of Clomot belonged a certain time to the Chapter of Beaune, i.e. to the canons serving the Notre-Dame church of Beaune.

Habits and legends

  • the fountain Collapse-Bottom

Until the end of the 19th century, - and unmemorable times - the young grooms of Arnay-the-Duke and surrounding villages liked to go to the wood of Bolt close to a fountain located at a very picturesque place and close to a pâquier or communal rough grazing. It is the fountain Collapse-Bottom. The young grooms, their parents or friends, were going to drink of his water, to collate, cross the fountain of a jump, then to dance on the close pâquier - From there his name, one says. Enough difficult to find, this fountain is located at the North-West towards a vault who is visible of all the area: the Contaut vault. To then descend the path to the North-West from the farm to find the vestiges of this fountain

  • the fountain of Contaut

With the bottom of the vault of the same name another fountain is. The latter to be published it, several centuries ago, the virtue to look after the scrofula. Remain of this fountain, the still intact framing.

  • Constraint of the Torches

The Prior of Saint-Jacob - small church existing with Arnay-the-Duke until in 1792, in the suburb of the same name - was held to be at the entry of the night to the pâquier (or rough grazing) with the King, fining of Mimeure (on the way of Arnay-the-Duke to the vault Contaut, first small rough grazing on the line). With the prior, accompanied by his " officiers" marguillier, cantors and parishioners and the last groom of the Saint-Jacob suburb, distributed torches of straw which they lit then. The prior and his officers raised in the air these ignited torches and the assistance protested " Mister de Mimeure you see us? ". The lord of Mimeure whose castle until the Revolution comprised five turns was supposed to see them and sent his herald to announce to the prior whom he had seen and accepted his homage. Then all the assistance of the Saint-Jacob suburb was to be restored by the last groom. Courtépée in its " Historical description of the Duchy of Bourgogne" appeared towards 1770 adds this " the origin of this singular habit comes from a donation of four ground newspapers of frankness, made by a lord (HILDUIN of Mimeure in 1088) with the prior under penalty of the loss of the fruits of the year. It is carried out exactly - This extremely old right is recognized by the prior on the burrows of Mimeure of 1550 and 1674. "

Demography

Personalities

- Jacques-Louis Small valley of Mimeure: born with Dijon in 1659, and placed in its childhood aupré of the Large Dolphin in the capacity as gentleman of honor, then became general lieutenant of the armies. Besides Louis XIV raised the grounds of Mimeure in marquisat around 1697 for J.L Valon. It had, according to certain texts, a talent for Latin poetry (several parts in this kind). One owes him of the Worms to the praise of the King (in Mercuries of the year 1677), and Jean Donneau de Visé pointed out, thereafter, the smoothness of the thoughts of this young French poet. He left, in 1707, with his reception with the French Academy (armchair 3), a speech which still exists in the collection of the French Academy. Last literary work that we know is an imitated Ode of Horace in 1715. Jacques-Louis Valon dies on March 3rd 1719 with Auxonne. Its widow, marchioness of Mimeure will have preserved an assiduous correspondence with Voltaire a long time.
