Milly-the-Forest

Milly-the-Forest is a common French, located in the department of the the Essonne and the area Île-de-France.

Geography

Encircled by timbered heights, Milly-the-Forest is located in the south of the the Essonne at some fifty six kilometers at the south-east of Paris, with 19 kilometers in the west of Fontainebleau, with 26 kilometers in the east of Etampes, and with 25 kilometers in the North-West of Nemours. The School, affluent of the the Seine, is the river which crosses it south to north.

History

The local History according to Dom Guillaume Morin, Historiographer of the Gâtinais, old Milly would have been founded by Dryus, 4th king of the Gaules, in the year -285 front J. - C.

Heraldic

Blasonnement of the traditional weapons of the city: Of sand to the money lion, with the chief of same. “OF MILLIACO MILES” while being the currency, and which one can translate by " knight of Milly"

Economy

  • Milly shelters a very large production of aromatics and medicinal. The company Daregal, world leader, was born in 1887 under the crook from Darbonne which is still with the orders of the company.
  • the Conservatoire national of the plants with perfume, medicinal, aromatic and industrial is installed on an old exploitation.

Culture

Residence of Christian Dior and Jean Cocteau which died there in 1963.
Jean Cocteau decorated the Chapelle Saint-Blaise-of-Simple with XIIe century at the end of the Fifties on the topic of the medicinal and condiment plants which make the reputation of Milly. Jean Cocteau is buried in this vault. Jean Tinguely helped of Niki de Saint Phalle produced Cyclop. Among the permanent collection exposed to the cultural center Paul Bedu, one finds the famous fabric Boronali.

Demography

The village

Milly comprises several structures: one finds there the College Jean Rostand, the Academy of the Two Valleys, a gymnasium for the sports activities accompanied by a sports ground, a media library, a swimming pool, a coach station, tradesmen of artisanal products… A market is organized every Thursday after midday under the market of Milly. Certain events occur during the year like vacuum-attics; at the beginning of summer holidays, one celebrates the Saint-Pierre, a fair is organized and one finds several horse-gears or attractions there, of the cultural stands of food or artisanal sale. It also shelters the house of the Regional natural park of the Gâtinais French, as well as the academy of the Plantes to perfume, medicinal, aromatic and industrial. Presence of a church dedicated to Saint Wulfran, a nave and only one side, marks influence of Templiers.
