Milliary Terminal

In the ancient Rome, the milliary columns were laid out all the Roman miles, that is to say approximately all the 1  460 meters on the layout of principal the Roman ways of Italy.

In the provinces, the milliary columns are not high of thousand into thousand, but simply to point out the maintenance work of the Roman ways, financed by the Emperor. As opposed to what their name could let believe, they were not laid out of thousand into thousand. They carried an inscription mentioning the name of the magistrate, or the emperor having made repair the road, as well as the date. They indicated in more the distances to traverse to reach the closest cities. They were thus closer to the road panels than of the milestones.

They indicated the distances according to varied measurements: Roman miles, (approximately all 1  460 meters), Gallic Mile, or their subdivisions.

On some of them, one can still read the inscription allowing to date them. Thus, the terminal located on the current commune of Paudex (Swiss) carries:

IMP (eratori) CÆS (ari) T (ito) ÆLIO ANTONIN (O) AUG (usto) PIO P (ontifici) M (aximo) TRIB (unicia) POT (estate) CO (N) S (uli) III P (atri) P (atriae). ADVENT (ico) M (illia) P (assuum) XXXVIII.

“Under the emperor César Titus Ælius Antoninus Auguste, the Piles, large pontiff, covered power tribunician, whereas he was consul for the third time, father of the fatherland. 38  000 steps of Avenches. ”

Many terminals were re-used thereafter, for example like support of fountains or cross.
