Millet beads
The millet beads is a annual Plante of the family of the Poacée S (Graminée) S), cultivated like secondary Céréale, for its edible seeds. The term indicates also these seeds consumed by the man and the animals domesic. It is cultivated of all the species of millet.
Scientific name: Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br. (synonym Pennisetum spicatum ), family of the Poacée S, subfamily of the Panicoideae , tribe of the Paniceae .
Common noun: millet beads, millet with candles, Mil pearl millet, small millet. of: Perlehirse, in: bulrush millet, pearl millet, be: mijo perlado, it: miglio perlato.
The millet pearl is large graminaceous, of 1 m up to 3-4 m in height. The inflorescence is a dense Panicule or false-ear, length 20 cm up to 1,5 m which recall the inflorescence of the snap rings (from where its millet name to candle). The seeds are Caryopse S, from 3 to 5 mm length, generally free of the glumelles ones. These globulous seeds with elliptic, of white color, yellowish or gray, resemble pearls.
Use
- human Consumption: it is a food crop which has some importance in India and with the Pakistan, like in the the African Sahel, in semi-arid zones. The seeds are consumed like the Riz, pulps, are cooked with the vapor… They are also transformed into Farine, but this one is not suitable for making bread. In Africa, one also manufactures of it beer (Dolo) starting from germinated seeds.
- animal Feeds: in Europe, the principal use is the food of the birds of Volière, the Volaille and formerly of the Bétail. The whole plant is also collected like fodder.
