Millau
Millau (in Languedocien Occitan Milhau ) is a common French, located in the department of the Aveyron and the area the Midday-Pyrenees.
Its inhabitants is called Millavois.
Geography
Located on the Tarn at the Confluent with the Dourbie in the heart of the Regional natural park of the Large Causses at the beginning of the Gorges of the Tarn and the Throats of Dourbie

History

875 : Amiliavum.
- 916 : Bernard, first Viscount of Millau.
- 1112 : Soft of Millau, heiress of the Viscount, marries Raimond-Berenger III of Barcelona (1082 - 1131).
- 1172 : Alphonse II of Aragon (1152-1196), grandson of Raymond-Berenger, attaches Millau to the Aragon.
- 1187 : A charter confirms the rights of Millau and its 6 consuls. Millau receives the Weapons of Aragon. The king is represented by his bayle (Baillif)
- 1209: The Évêque of Mende (Gévaudan) manages Millau, for the Église , vis-a-vis the crisis Cathare /albigeoise.
- 1222 : Raymond VI of Toulouse (1156 - 1222) takes Millau.
- 1258 : Jacques Ier d' Aragon (1243-1311) gives up its rights on Millau to the profit of the crown of France.
- 1271 : Died of Jeanne of Toulouse (1225 - 1271) and of his/her husband Alphonse of Poitiers (1220 - * 1271) (brother of Saint Louis). Millau passes to the France, 3 flowers of lily are added to its weapons. Millau is the seat of a baillage.
- 1356 : General states - Millau east sits of the Élection of the High step of the Rouergue (tax district).
- 1362 : The Rouergue is yielded to the England.
- February 18th 1362: Jean Chandos takes possession of Millau for the King of England.
- 1370 : End of the English presence in Rouergue.
- 1560 : Millau is acquired with the Réforme.
- 1629 : Victoire of the royal forces (Rohan: reformed, Noailles: Catholic).

Economy
After recognizebeing recognized during more than one century like " Capital of leather and the ganterie" , Millau remains famous for its activity of Mégisserie (leather gloves).
Millau is the seat of the Chamber of commerce and industry of Millau South-Aveyron. It manages the aerodrome.
Millau is, nowadays, a site privileged for the practice of the sport activities and nature. Capital of the coasting flight in the Eighties, it remains a high-place of the parapente and theplane one. All last Saturdays of September, since 1972, the 100 km of Millau attract nearly 1.500 competitors. A first loop which corresponds to a marathon, then a return ticket between Millau and Saint-Africa.

Others
Millau was the theater of a fact various, disassembling symbolic system of the restaurant McDonald's, by a whole of farmers of which the trade unionist Jose Bove, in customs opposition to measurements of the the United States on various products of which roquefort in reaction to the European refusal of their Bœuf to the hormones. Various demonstrations related to the committed legal proceedings against the dismantlers whose Jose Bove followed.
The gathering close to Millau the 8,9 and August 10th 2003 (called Larzac 2003) on the initiative of the Peasant confederation gathered thousands of altermondialists on the plate of Larzac for a gathering mixing debates, workshops of work and concerts.

Personalities related to the commune
Emma Calvé (1858 - 1942), celebrates professional singer of opera at the beginning of the century, sells its Château of Cabrières, and comes to move into the house, transformed into hotel which bears its name.
Didier Auriol, racing driver, world champion of the rallys in 1994. It is not native of Millau, but resides at it.
