Milkor MGL

Milkor MGL is a grenade thrower manufactured in South Africa, by the company Milkor Marketing. MGL is the abbreviation for Multiple Grenade Launcher , that is to say Multiple Lance-Grenades.

It is about a semi-automatic weapon , intended significantly to increase the firepower of a small unit of soldiers, compared with the traditional grenade throwers with a blow, the such M203. MGL is conceived to be simple, robust and reliable. Introduced into the military world in 1983, MGL was gradually adopted by more than 30 countries; it was the proof of its effectiveness in the harsh environments, energy of the jungles to the deserts.

During the last decades, several improvements were made to the original model.

MGL

The original MGL was conceived in 1981. Its production began in 1983 for the Defense force from South Africa, under Y2 designation. It is equipped with a cylindrical charger with 6 blows, resembling the barrel of the Revolver S, and accepts the majority of the grenades of 40 mm. The barrel is attached to a spring and turns automatically to each shooting, but the spring must be recomprimé with each recharging. During a recharging, the back part of the weapon must be swivelled in the contrary direction of the needles of a watch to have access to the rooms. Each ammunition is inserted manually and one by one, because the barrel cannot be withdrawn.

The MGL has of a foldable metal stick and a Trijicon Armson Occluded Eye Gunsight adjustable (lens offering night vision and Red dowry), making it precise until a distance of 375 meters. The position of the vertical grip before is adjustable for more comfort. The weapon is also equipped with a notch of safety above the handle.

MGL Mk-1

Mk-1 is a modified version of the original weapon. Its production started in 1996. This version will be used for the design of two other versions by Milkor Marketing: Mk-1S and Mk-1L. Mk-1S is a version improved of the design of Mk-1. Mk-1L takes again all the improvements of Mk-1S and in additions of news.

MGL Mk1-S

  • addition of several Picatinny rails: four on the gun and one on the top of the structure;

MGL Mk1-L

Mk-1L is Mk-1S which incorporates a new sliding stick and a longer barrel (140 mm). Certain special grenades, the such the nonlethal Teargas S and grenades , are too long to adapt to the old models of MGL. The MGL Mk-1L thus makes it possible to draw a larger variety from ammunition, and is adapted better to the operations of maintenance of peace and Maintenance of law and order.

MGL-140

The MGL-140 was produced in 2005 by Milkor the USA. It is equipped with a Modstock Vltor, a completion “ Sopmod Tan ” (dyed ocher), and with a relaxation double action. It has a barrel of 140 mm, conceived to support the new “hyper-lethal” ammunition with large sphere of activity, produced by Martin Electronics Inc (MEI). The combo MGL/Hellhound is famous to be a major progress among the systems of grenade thrower.

M32 MGL

In October 2005, the United States Marine Body granted a contract to Milkor the USA, to produce 9.000 units of MGL-140, equipped with not revealed improvements. The weapons were produced in the United States. The new versions, indicated “ M32 Multiple Grenade Launcher ”, were deployed in the battalions of navy in Iraq, in March 2006, at ends of tests.
