Military committee of the European Union
The Military committee of the European Union (in English European Union Military Commitee - EUMC ) is an authority, installation within the framework of the European Politique of safety and defense, to give " opinion militaires" and to put forth recommendations on the military questions with the political Committee and of safety of the the Council of the European Union. It gives directives to the staff of the European Union.
The Military committee of the EU is composed of the chiefs of the defense forces (or chiefs of the armed forces or chiefs of staff of the armies, according to national names) of each Member State. The latter are represented in Brussels by permanent military representatives.
It derives an work group to treat technical businesses, the military Work group of the European Union (GTMUE) and a group called Headline goal task-force (HTF) which treats primarily definition of the military capacities dedicated to the military instrument of the European Union.
The Military committee has a permanent president who does not change with each presidency of the Council twice a year. It is itself former chief of the defense forces of a Member State, indicated by the Council for a mandate of three years principle. The president of the Committee provides the functions of military adviser of the General secretary of the EU.
The current president is, since November 2006, the French general Henri Bentégeat, former chief of staff of the French Armies. Its predecessors were the general Rolando Mosca Moschini (Italy) (2003-2006) and the general Gustav Hägglunds (Finland) (2001-2003).
