Military college

In France

Successors of the military academies preparatory, then military colleges, there exists in France six colleges of defense , distributed between the three armies. They accommodate, each year, approximately 4  000 pupils in boarding school, of the class of 6th (Autun and Grenoble) until the preparatory classes at the military universities (called “cornices” or fleets).

These colleges accommodate pupils originating in all the French areas, overseas and from abroad, whose parents are with the service of the State. More than 70% of the places offered are reserved to the children of soldiers of active or reserve. (Source: official site of COFAT = Command of the Training companies of the Army)

The " term; college of the défense" is very recent, these establishments were before called " colleges militaires".

With a framing and buildings financed on the budget of the ministry for defense, these establishment exempt an mainstream education following the example other colleges, without specific military teaching and under the control of state education.

Vocation

The colleges of defense have a double vocation today:

Family assistance

The colleges of defense allow the children who are provided education for there, in particular children of soldiers, servants of the ministry for defense and civils servant, to have a stable education in spite of the important mobility of their parents in their offering a teaching of quality and a system of boarding school. The colleges of defense are reserved to the children of French nationality. However, the children of soldiers of foreign nationality being useful or having been useful in the French Armies can ask to be allowed in the classes of the secondary education. The mode of access for the classes of the secondary education is that of the family assistance. Under this mode, a decree of the Minister for defense fixes the categories of having right and the minimal quota of admissions reserved to the children of soldiers. The admissions in the colleges of defense are marked each year per decision of the Minister for defense, on a proposal from a commission of classification which holds account: 1° Of the personal file of the candidates; 2° Of the notes obtained with the annual review of entry when it is necessary; 3° Of the family circumstances under conditions fixed by decree of the Minister for defense. Foreign pupils, not belonging to a category of having rights, can be allowed within the limit of 3% of the allowed pupils each year. In the facts, a priority is granted to the war orphans and to the children of soldiers abroad, subject to have made a success of the examination of entry when there is one of them.

Helps with the recruitment of the officers of career

Colleges of defense, thanks to their preparatory classes " spécialisées" , also prepare with the entrance examinations at the military universities:

These preparatory classes are opened with all young French wishing to prepare at these schools.

The college of the defense of Saint-Cyr military school is the distance heir to the House of education for noble young girls founded by Madam de Maintenon, under the reign of Louis XIV in splendid buildings of the 17th century, works of J. Hardouin Mansart. Bonaparte transported there then the military special School, created in 1802 in Fontainebleau. This prestigious École trained the officers of the Army until 1945 after having been shaven by the Americans during the bombardments of Versailles. This School was then transferred to the camp from Coëtquidan in Morbihan, where it is there always. The De Gaulle General orders the rebuilding of the buildings, to perpetuate the memory of this famous places and the thousands of officers who left there. With the re-entry 1966 the military college opens its doors, it becomes military college thereafter and opens to the girls in the years 1980. Today they are some 750 pupils who follow the programs of state education in these walls in charge of memory.

With Autun, Napoleon and his brother Joseph were pupils of the military College. Maurice Audin, French mathematician assassinated in 1957 in Algiers by the parachutists of the Massu General, was pupil of the military college of Autun of 1944 to 1948.
