Military Rank
A Grade Militaire indicates the statute of a soldier in the hierarchy of the armies.
In general however, the function takes precedence over the rank.
Old armies
Roman army
The ranks of the Roman armies were much fewer than those of the modern armies. The denomination varied according to the centuries. One can however retain the principal following ranks:- Under the Republic

- Ashigaru: soldier with foot, Rank and file
- Bushi: soldier of row recognized
- Daimyō: administrator of a province (lord)
- Shogun: military dictator
- Jizamurai, or will ji-samurai: warrior who during the time of Kamakura, was assigned with a ground and was to cultivate it. Will ji-samurai were in fact of the peasants who, in the event of war, were to render a combatant service to the lord on which they depended.
- Musha : Old name given to the warriors.
