Military Order of Merit (Canada)

The military Order of Merit is a high Canadian distinction established in 1972.

This distinction is given to the Canadian, member of the military forces, having shown of a devotion and a assiduity well beyond what the duty ordered to them.

The currency of the Order is OFFICIUM ANTE COMMODUM , meaning “the service before oneself”.

Description

The medal is a right pattée cross of color blue-enamel. It is bordered of gold and carries in the center a red ring with inscription MERIT DESERVES CANADA, the overcome whole of the Crown of St-Edouard.

The badge is suspended around the neck with a blue ribbon (1,5 Po) at the gilded edges (0,1875). The badge buttonhole, a blue cross with a red maple sheet, is related to the ribbon of small behavior. Promotions in the Order are indicated by the port of the badge buttonhole of the current rank and the former ranks on the same ribbon.

The desing is a creation of Mr. Bruce Beatty.

Its Majesty the Queen Elisabeth II is Souveraine of the Order, Gouverneure Générale Its Excellence Mrs. Michaëlle Jean is Chancelière and Commandeure and the principal Commander is the Chief of staff the general Rick J. Hillier.

Eligibility

The number of allowed member accounts for 0.1% of all the members of the Canadian Forces. Of this number, 6% are Commandeurs, 30% are Officiers and 64% are Membres. The nominations are made by the joint mandators of the Forces and are evaluated once per annum. It is Gouverneure Générale which gives the distinction at the time of a ceremony to Rideau Hall.
