Military History

The military history is the component of the History which studies all the military activities; i.e. those which, within a political framework, relate to groups of armed men. It is not limited to the study of the battles and of the wars but is also interested in the evolution of the materials, the armament, the tactic and the strategy. Like the general history, the military history must reveal the truth and subject its sources to a scientific criticism. Unfortunately, more than of others, it lends itself easily to the beautiful legends and national chauvinisms.

Objectives of the military history

To be taught in the military academies beyond, the military history is a field of the Histoire a long time in vogue which has, at the time of the 20th century, suffered much of its academic and event-driven reputation.

The military history, it is obviously the history of the feats of arms, but also the study, of the place of the military field in the very whole company, in the economy, the Démographie, or even the Géographie! The military history can also be eminently technical, with the history of the weapons, the strategies, the budgetary incidences of the military thing…

The goal of the military history is initially the study of the causes and the consequences of the war, major social fact, since the origins of humanity. It is then the science of the Défense with large D, now called safety, broader term: protection, with the local plan, national or beyond, of a group of men, a city, a State or a Nation.

Types of armed conflicts

There exist several ways of classifying the armed conflicts, by distinguishing conventional and not-conventional conflicts in particular.

the conventional conflicts imply soldiers, clearly identified, fighting without using weapons of massive destruction.
the not-conventional conflicts refer to

the Guérilla, the movements of rebellion, the terrorist attacks
the use of chemical nuclear weapons, or biological.
