The term Alto Milanese applies to the territory which is just in extreme cases of the Province of Milan and of Varèse.

The core of the Milanese Viola is consisted the Conurbation of Legnano, Castellanza, Busto Arsizio, Gallarate and corresponds to one of the most industrialized zones and most populated Italy.

The territory is sprinkled by the river Olona and its affluents, the torrents Lura, Bozzente and Arno, and also by the Canal Villoresi.

It is crossed by the Autoroute of the Lakes (A8 and A9), the trunk road 33 of the Simplon and by the railway lines Milan - Gallarate and Saronno - Novare.

It accommodates the international airport of Malpensa

History

During the Early middle ages, the Milanese Viola were divided between Contadi of Seprio (capital Castelseprio) and of Burgaria (probably under Parabiago), two counties depending on the historical area of Milan. Between, with the disappearance of the two counties, the Milanese Viola started to be distinguished like zone from influence from Gallarate and Legnano.

Until the creation of the Province of Varèse in 1927, contours of the Milanese Viola will be well defined: indeed, the territory is consisted the district of Gallarate (included at that time in the province of Milan), seat of the sub-prefecture.

The old zone of the Milanese Viola, created in 1971, included/understood the communes of: Albizzate, Arconate, Arsago Seprio, Besnate, Buscate, Busto Arsizio, Busto Garolfo, Cairate, Canegrate, Cardano Al Campo, Carnago, Casorate Sempione, Cassano Magnago, Castano Firstly, Castellanza, Cavaria idiot Premezzo, Cerro Maggiore, Dairago, Fagnano Olona, Ferno, Gallarate, Golasecca, Gorla Maggiore, Gorla Undervalue, Jerago idiot Orago, Legnano, Lonate Pozzolo, Magnago, Marnate, Nerviano, Oggiona idiot Santo Stefano, Olgiate Olona, Parabiago, Rescaldina, Samarate, San Giorgio known Legnano, San Vittore Olona, Solbiate Arno, Solbiate Olona, Somma Lombardo, Villa Cortese, Vizzola Ticino.
