Mikkeli (in Swedish S: T Michel ) is a Finnish city , capital of the area of Savonie of the South ( Etelä-Soap maakunta ) and province of Eastern Finland ( Itä-Suomen lääni ).
The municipality is bordered by the communes of Haukivuori in north, Juva and Puumala in the east, Riistina in the south, Hirvensalmi in the west and finally Kangasniemi in the North-West.
In 2001 the town of Mikkeli amalgamated with the municipalities of Mikkeli-countryside and Anttola .
Current the European Commissioner Finnish Olli Rehn and a former police chief (from now on governor of the Bank of Finland) Erkki Liikanen was born in Mikkeli. The former skier Harri Kirvesniemi and the footballer Jussi Jääskeläinen are also originating in the city.
However, the city is located on one of the branches of the railroad of Savo, and thus is well served by the rail (3h15 of Helsinki, 1:40 of Kuopio).
Mikkeli is before a whole important road junction, passage almost obliged to gain is of Finland from Helsinki. Main road 5 comes from Helsinki via Lahti and Heinola and continuous towards Kuopio, main road 13 connects the city to Lappeenranta and to the Russia by the border post of Nuijamaa, finally the 15 come from Kouvola.
