Michael Anthony " Mike" Powell , born the November 10th 1963 with Philadelphia), is a American athlete , specialist in Long jump.

The great exploit of Mike Powell is to have beaten Carl Lewis finally of the championship of the world in Tokyo in 1991, at the same time as it beat the mythical record of Bob Beamon, old man 23 year old, with 8,95 m with the 5th test. The exploit is all the more extraordinary as Carl Lewis, unconquered since 1981, carried out this day the best contest of his career. The average of its 5 jumps being of 8,83 m: the best to 8,91 with the 3rd test but the wind being higher than 2 m/s, it could not be approved like new record. The new personal record of Lewis will be 8,87 m also with the 5th test. Probably the most extraordinary contest of long jump of the history.

Mike Powell also realized, the following year, 8,99 m in altitude with Sestrières, but with too favorable wind (>2 m/s). There the same day, Heike Drechsler carried out 7,63 m still with a wind slightly too favorable to be approved. It nevertheless was beaten with OJ of Barcelona by Carl Lewis.

The following year, it confirmed its championship of the world.

After its failure with OJ of Atlanta, he announced his withdrawal of the competition. He finally takes it again in 2001 before withdrawing himself definitively after OJ of Athens.
