Michael Allen Patton , known as Mike Patton , is a singer, musician, type-setter and American actor born the January 27th 1968 with Eureka, California.

Mike Patton is or was the singer of Mr. Bungle, Faith No More, Fantômas, and Tomahawk. It is located at the crossroads of many musical styles, in particular the metal, the pop, and the avant-garde. He is joint owner of the label Ipecac on which he leaves from now on his albums.

He collaborated with many artists, Björk, John Zorn, daN The Automator, Massive Attack, Norah Jones, Amon Tobin to only quote most known. He also composed two works of music of avant-garde left on the label Tzadik John Zorn.

Mike Patton draws her inspiration from many sources. Its musical tastes go from the type-setter of modern music György Ligeti to the singer of variety Burt Bacharach while passing through the group of metal Slayer, the Melvins and the type-setters of film music Ennio Morricone and Nino Rota. It has also a passion for the Italy (it had a long time a house with Florence, and is married with an Italian). The movement Futuriste initiated in Italy at the beginning of the twentieth century inspired a complete album to him. Its personality, its eclecticism, and its talent make of it a personality very for the independent music scene.

It began a career from actor like first role in the film Firecracker of Steve Balderson.

Career

The years Bungle/Faith No More

Mike Patton makes her beginnings as singer in the group Mr. Bungle, which it forms with friends. In 1989, it passes a casting for the group Faith No More, which seeks a singer. Between 1991 and 1997, it belongs to these groups in parallel, which does not go without causing some tensions within these formations.

It manages nevertheless to find time to record two very experimental albums solo who left on the label Tzadik. The first album solo of Mike Patton leaves in 1995. It is entitled Adult Themes for Voice . It was recorded by Patton in various hotel rooms, only with one microphone, its voice and some bidouillages on the tape. The result, which approaches much works of Musique bruitist or avant-garde, is very difficult access. The second album solo, Pranzo Oltranzista , takes as a starting point Italian receipts of kitchen Futuriste S of the beginning of the 20th century. This time, it is recorded with musicians (of which John Zorn and Marc Ribot, and even if it is more " facile" that the precedent, it remains very distant from what it can do with Faith No More, and resembles more the most radical pieces of Mr. Bungle.

In the same vein, it recorded the album She under the name Maldoror, with Masami Akita, (more known under the name of Merzbow) an artist of Musique bruitist Japanese. Maldoror is the name of a hero malefic in the work of the Count de Lautréamont.

It also took part in an album of impromptu Musique with in particular John Zorn and Trey Spruance, which is entitled Weird Little Boy . All the participants in this project recognized that the result was catastrophic. The disc is not published any more besides.

After the album Album off the Year , Faith No More separates, and Mike Patton records in 1999 an additional album with Mr. Bungle. After the round, the group met never again and does not wish to continue the adventure.

The Ipecac years

Forming part of no formation more, Mike Patton then launches out in a series of all projects azimuths. The first in date and its more important to date is the group Fantômas. As for Maldoror, the name of the project is drawn from a genius of the evil of the French literature. Patton composes integrality of the music, which it makes play group made up of its preferred guitarist, bass player and beater. Not finding a label to accommodate it, it creates of them one, which it names Ipecac. It is on this label that it left all its albums since 2000.
Il creates also the group Tomahawk, little time after, with which it records three albums; the first éponyme, the second " MIT Gas" , and the third " Anonymous".

To the beginning of the year 2000, it launches out in the recording of demonstrations for its project Peeping Tom. For this album which he wants pop, he signs at the label Reprise again Records to have a better distribution. It will be necessary to await a change of label (return to Ipecac) and the year 2006 to see arriving the album, which is produced by several famous artists of the electronic music (Amon Tobin, Massive Attack, daN the Automator, in particular).

Since the creation of its label, it recorded also the album Romances with the paces of film music (and with titles in French) with the Norwegian artist Kaada, and an album of hip hop, entitled General Patton vs. the X-Ecutioners , with the X-Ecutioners. This album uses a great number of film samples of war.

Escapades

Mike Patton is not only known for her qualities of singer and type-setter. It also defrayed the chronicle by its sometimes outrageous behavior. With Mr. Bungle, it appeared in concert with a mask S&M, and multiplied on scene the provocative attitudes, even scatologic. It held in the press of the hard remarks about other artists, scorning even the members of its own groups.
