Mihintale is a site of the north of the Sri Lanka, close to Anurâdhapura, where place would have had the famous meeting between Devanampiya Tissa and the emissary of Ashoka (Mahinda and Sanghamita) which would have imported the Bouddhisme in the island.

The site would have been born from the commemoration of this meeting, one would have founded there oldest Stûpa of the island. Mihintale became since a high place of Buddhism. According to Faxian, nearly 2000 monks resided at it at the end of the 4th century.

Today, a pilgrimage always takes place on the rock where would have taken place the meeting founder of the Singhalese king and the Indian emissary.
