Miguel Hidalgo

Miguel Gregorio Antonio Ignacio Hidalgo Costilla (May 8th 1753 in the Actual position of Guanajuato - July 30th 1811 with Chihuahua) was a monk and Mexican rebel there.

Priest

Hidalgo is a Creole, it follows studies of theology and is ordered priest at 25 years. It meets the Father Jose María Morelos, who incites it with resistance against Spanish colonialism .

Revolutionist

He is the priest of the parish of Dolores Hidalgo, a mining small town. He is an avid reader of the French literature of the Lumières prohibited. He learns the languages précolombiennes and defies several rules of the Catholic church openly, including chastity (he will have five children).

Alerted by Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez (“Corregidora”) that its revolutionary plot is discovered and that he will be questioned soon by the police force, it decides to act and pushes the famous Grito de Dolores since its bell-tower in the night of the September 16th 1810, calling with the revolt with the famous war cry “Long life to the Virgin of Guadalupe, lives the king Fernando VII, with bottom the bad government!”. It will direct after crowd against the Spaniards and the contrary Creoles with independence, who will be massacred under his orders has Guanajuato and other cities.

After the victory of the Goes up of mow Cruces, against any waiting, in one moment of apparent indecision, the Hidalgo Father orders the retirement towards Valladolid. Today still one is not explained the reasons of his decision.

Martyr and Hero

Hidalgo is captured by Felix María Calleja at the time of the battle of Puente de Calderón the January 17th 1811, its partisans are dispersed. The enquiry the constrained one with repentance publicly then it was shot for its " crimes" , the July 30th 1811.

He is regarded in his country as the father of independence, a State bears his name.

Its remainders rest in the Mausolée located at the base of El Ángel of Independencia to Mexico City, in company of those of: Juan Aldama, Ignacio Allende, Nicolás Cheer, Vicente Guerrero, Jose Mariano Jiménez, Mariano Matamoros, Francisco Javier Undermined, Jose María Morelos there Pavón, Andrés Quintana Roo, Leona Vicario and Guadalupe Victoria
