The Mig-25 Mikoyan-Gourevitch Russian (: МикояниГуревичМиГ-25) is a Plane interceptor and Soviet recognition known under the name of Code NATO Foxbat . It is the first fighter able to reach a speed of Mach 3 to be brought into service in the world.

It is today the only plane (with his/her big brother the Mig-31 Mikoyan-Gurevich Foxhound) still in service able to fly has more Mach 3, SR-71 having drawn its reverence.

Design

In 1960, Soviet takes note of the development, by the American firm North American, of a bomber with high-altitude able to fly to Mach 3: XB-70 Valkyrie. With an aim of countering this threat, the leaders of the the USSR decided to launch the study of an interceptor trisonic. The program was officialized in February 1962 under Ye-155 name, although the American project ended up being abandoned.

Three prototypes were manufactured: Ye- 155R- 1 of recognition accomplished its first flight the March 9th 1964, Ye- 155R- 3 and the version Ye-155P-1 interceptor which flew for the first time on September 9th, 1964. These three aircraft were equipped with two engines Toumanski R-15B-300 of: 10210 kgp with Post-combustion. They beat many records of climbing speeds and altitude. These records were approved by FAI like the fact of only one apparatus called R-266.

The Migone was primarily built out of stainless steel with leading edges out of titanium in order to resist the heat caused by the friction generated by the flight at Mach 3. It was also equipped with a Empennage bidérive, radar and air intake with variable geometry, Doppler very powerful, but equipped with a technology of electronics to lamps very late on the Western equipment. Despite everything, at very high speed, the apparatus was practically unable to carry out an operation, which constituted a serious defect in the event of whirling combat, although the mission of this plane was never the close combat (or " dog-fight") or prohibition, but the interception. And in particular of American bombers evolving/moving with high-altitude and raised speed, like the XB-70 Valkyrie. One can qualify the Migone as being a “pure interceptor”, (like its successor, the Migone, or the F-106 has “American Dart Delta”), contrary to the F-15C or of Sukhoï 27, which are, them also heavy hunters, capable of very high speeds, but equipped with an agility in combat which outclasses that of the Migone by far, in all his versions.

When it entered in service in 1970 in Mig-25P version ( Foxbat has codes NATO of it), equipped with an high speed at Mach 3, a powerful radar and four air-to-air missiles, the Migone initially caused a panic among the observers and military analysts Western. The true capacities of the fighter will not be known before 1976. September 6th, 1976, lieutenant V. Belenko controls Soviet of Mig-25PD (model 84-D) made defection for the Japan and thus helps the Americans to determine the Soviet technological innovations.

This plane was built (all versions included) with 1190 specimens. The Migones of interception Russian were withdrawn from the service in 1994, but the versions with export and of recognition are always in activity. The successor of Foxbat was the Mig-31 Foxhound which entered in service in 1983.

Engagements

Years 1970

Between the autumn 1971 and spring 1972, four Mig Soviet 25R based in Egypt carried out reconnaissance missions with the top of Israel. It met once a patrol of F-4 but they succeeded in escaping.

Years 1980

In 1981, two Mig-25 Syrians were descended by Israeli F-15. According to not-Western sources Mig-25 would have cut down a F-15.

In 1982, another Mig-25 would have been cut down by a Ground-to-air missile Israeli Hawk.

The Migones were in service in the Iraqi air force during the Guerre Iran-Iraq but the results are hardly known.

The May 3rd 1982, Gulfstream II of the government Algeria N with 14 people on board whose Foreign Minister going to Teheran was cut down by Mig-25 Iraqi.

Years 1990

During the war of the Gulf of 1991, two Mig-25 was descended by F-15C from U.S Air Force. After the war, a F-16 destroyed Mig-25 which flew over the area closed in the south of Iraq.

It would seem that the first day of the release of the war, a F-18 of the US Navy was cut down by Mig-25PDS Iraqi with a missile R-40DT. The forever found American pilot.

At the time of an other incident, Mig-25 Foxbat E, after having avoided eight American F-15 fired three missiles on an electronic EF-111 of jamming, which forced it to give up its mission and, following the absence from jamming, caused the loss of a F-15 due to a ground-to-air missile. This involved the capture of the pilot.

Another time, two Mig-25 fired their missiles on a pair from F-15 that those avoided, two other F-15 united with the continuation. They fired ten air-to-air missiles on the whole, but none reached them.

In May 1997, a Mig-25 Indian flew over the capital Pakistan ease Islamabad at supersonic speed, worrying the population. The apparatus was inaccessible for F-16 of the Pakistani air force. This overflight still worsened the relations already tended between India and Pakistan.

Years 2000

December 23rd, 2002, Mig-25 Iraqi destroyed a drone RQ-1 Predator armed with air-to-air missiles AIM-92 Stinger.
No Iraqi apparatus was used during the invasion of 2003, the majority having been destroyed on the ground or having been hidden (the Iraqi army not having hesitated to camouflage them in sand).

At the time of the explosion of the Soviet block, the Migones were distributed between the old countries composing the USSR. But the planes are badly maintained because the production of parts of replacement is stopped. Despite everything some apparatuses always fly.

A Mig-25PU pertaining to the university Michail Gromov of research on the flight is used to accomplish parabolic flights and carries sometimes passengers.

  • : In 1979, it receives Soviet Union a batch of twenty apparatuses of the type Mig-25B and Mig-25BU like four reconnaissance aircraft MiG- 25R . On these apparatuses, there remain still fourteen Mig-25B and DRUNK like three MiG- 25R in-flight status (2/2005).

  • : There would remain to him still an aircraft able to fly (8/2004).

  • : Azerbaïdjan has eight Mig-25PD , fourteen Mig-25RB and approximately six two-seat trainers Mig-25RU/DRUNK , recovered in 1991 when the Soviet block was dislocated.

  • : Bielorussia recovered 62 Mig-25 Soviet armed forces. But since, all the Mig-25 were withdrawn from the service.

  • Bulgaria : Bulgaria returned three Mig-25RBT and a Mig-25RU , because it of it was not satisfied. After the collapse of the USSR, they were exchanged against Mig-23BN . A Mig-25RBT was lost.

  • India : The IAF had six Mig-25RB and two Mig-25RU before deciding to replace them between 2002 and 2005 by satellites of observation and drones of recognition.

  • Iraq : Iraq received eight Mig-25RB and twenty Mig-25PD . In 1985, an apparatus was crushed after an explosion of gears. In 1987, a second Mig-25 underwent the same fate because of a maintenance error. The majority of the other apparatuses were destroyed on the ground or envoys in Iran, during the war of the Gulf in 1991.

  • Iran : Received apparatuses of Iraq at the time of the first war of the Gulf

  • Kazakhstan : ?

  • Libya : This one bought 30 Mig-25PD , five Mig-25RU and five Mig-25RB . In 1999, there were talks with Russia concerning an acquisition of other apparatuses.

  • : In 1996, Peru bought three Mig-25 pertaining to Bielorussia. The apparatuses, badly maintained, appeared practically useless.

  • Russia : Russia lays out in the military sector of Moscow of 41 Mig-25 and in that of Saint-Pétersbourg of 28 Mig-25 . The greatest part made up of is mig -25RBSch equipped with modern avionics. Approximately 70 aircraft are ready to fly (2005).

  • Syria : Syria received a delivery of eight Mig-25RB , 30 Mig-25PD interceptors and five Mig-25PU of drive. On several occasions during the Years 1990, it had difficulties in maintain its apparatuses. In 2001, it made equip some with its apparatuses of a new avionics, so that operations of recognition can be implemented above the Israeli territory. Currently some 25 apparatuses are still in operating condition.
