Miercurea-Ciuc
Miercurea-Ciuc (in Hungarian Csíkszereda , in German Szeklerburg , in Latin Sicolsburgum ) is a town of Transylvania, in Romania, chief town of the Judeţ de Harghita.
Geography
Miercurea-Ciuc is located on the river Olt. It is one of the coldest cities of Romania, with temperatures winter often going down until -30°C.
Demography
According to the census of 2002, the town of Mirecurea-Ciuc was made up with more than 80% of Hungarian. The city is officially bilingual: Hungarian and Rumanian are used in the administration, education and justice.
History
Before 1918, Miercurea-Ciuc was the capital of the district of Csík in the Royaume of Hungary. Between 1927 and 1938 it was the capital of the district of Ciuc in the Kingdom of Romania.
