Midnight Oil

Midnight Oil is a group of Rock Australien famous for its ecological engagements (against the Nucléaire mainly). Between 1978 and 2002, not less than 16 albums were carried out. An atypical career for a group which forever have the equal one since.

Biography

Beginnings

The group is formed initially under the name of " Farm" in the Suburbs of Sydney in 1971 before changing name for " Midnight Oil" in 1976 with Rob Hirst with the battery, Martin Rotsey and Jim Moginie with the Guitar, Andrew " Bear" James with the low and Peter Garrett with the Song. The members of the group showed always their attachment with the values ecologists (amongst other things for the Dénucléarisation), and militated to defend the rights of the workmen and to protect the Aborigènes.

Rejected by all the Recording companies in reasons of its quite marked ideals, the group is constrained, in 1978, to create its own label: Powderworks. The helping hand of Peter Garrett will become the Logo about it. 1978 with 1981, Midnight Oil leaves its first four albums which are hardly success out of Australia, except for the title " Cold Cold Change" , present on the album Head Insult. The production was not with the height and the group was still locked up in a style Rock Punk difficult ragor of access.

Success

In 1982, " Oils" (nickname given by the fans) the Synthétiseurs, the acoustic Guitares and the choruses integrate to differently develop their music while writing texts even more virulent. The album 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 propels them in top of the Top 40 Australien during forty weeks. They make promotion of it while playing, in particular, in prisons.

They go to London at the time when the the United Kingdom militates for nuclear disarmament.

Peter Garrett is presented to the Australian Sénat but is not elected, drawn aside by political arrangements with the 2nd turn.

Dedication

In 1984, the group records with Tokyo the album Red Sails in the Sunset, whose small pocket shows the town of Sydney devastated by a nuclear explosion. Midnight Oil seems to take the changing of the Australian Rock, in company of Inxs.

After having passed a good part of the year 1986 in the Australian Bush near the populations aboriginals, Midnight Oil appears to become ripe. The Diesel album & Dust will be the album which will be the most success, with the tubes “Beds Are Burning”, “The Dead Heart”, “Dreamworld”, or “Could Down That Weapon”. Diesel & Dust remain, to date, the largest success of the group and a reference impossible to circumvent of traditional of the Rock.

The Oils start an enormous world tour then.

In 1990 leaves the album Blue Sky Mining, in the line of the precedent, although tackling world subjects (deforestation, acid rains…) and not purely Australian. " Blue Sky Mine" , " Forgotten Years" , " Bedlam Bridge" , " King Off The Mountain" and " One Country" were the individual ones.

May 30th of this same year, the group organizes, in full round, a concert improvised in front of the seat of the Oil company Exxon (which was located at the World Trade Center), shown to have poured tons of oil in Alaska.

Decline

In 1992 leaves the furious Scream In Blue - live which presents the group under its true nature in concert, very far from the hits gauged for the radio. What probably destabilized more than one fan.

In 1993 leaves excel it album Earth and Sun and Moon. The group returns to a more natural sound and an orchestration definitely more cordial. As to (almost) each album, Midnight Oil leaves to make an additional world tour. Curiously, the public follows less and less.

After three years of silence, Midnight Oil leaves the album Breathe (1996). Certainly more the most acoustic intimist and of its career. Because of new musical currents emerging at the time, the album will pass almost unperceived. 20.000 Watts RSL, single the best off, gives the harbingers of the end of the group. Redneck Wonderland, in (1998), is surely the most aggressive album and darkest. The group takes a consequent musical turn by mixing fronts supersaturated with new technologies of the time.

A round is organized in 2000 following which The Real Thing leaves, taking again the best moments in the concerts in acoustics realized in 1993 and 1994 like some news of quality.

The group also took part in the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games of Sydney in 2000.

End

Capricornia is the last album of Midnight Oil because Peter Garrett leaves the group in December 2002 to devote itself to the policy, dissolving by là-même the group. Since separation, the other members continue to play in other groups and with various artists Australiens.

The group was reformed several times for concerts of charity:

  • at the time of the Project Gaia of Alan Simon in 2003.
  • participation in compilation Peace Not War against the War in Iraq.
  • concert with humane goal (" Wave Aid" in favor of the victims of the tsunami of December 26th, 2004) the January 29th 2005.
  • Rob Hirst, Jim Moginie and Martin Rotsey played the 11 November 2007 with Sydney, under the name of Ebb Tide & The Shorebreakers, with the profit of an artist and friendly Australien reaches of a leukemia.
