Michelangelo Anselmi

Michelangelo Anselmi (Lucques, 1492 - Parma, 1556), also named lo Scalabrino , is a Italian painter of the school of Parma.

Biography

Its family is established of Lucques with His towards the 1500 and in 1511. It is quoted there for the first time as painter. Raise Sodoma and of Bartolomeo Neroni, it is subject to the influences of Beccafumi too. One preserves only two of his works at His, a fresco in the church of Fontegiusta and a wood of the Holy Family in the National Art gallery, also allotted to Neroni.

Towards 1515, it goes to Parma, the birthplace of the Antonio father, and it is indexed there as painter as of 1520: as from this year, Anselmi always works in Parma, except for briefs stays with Venice in 1538, in 1542 with Mantoue, in 1544 with His and 1546 always in Venice.

Its first important works in Parma are:

  • frescos in 1522 - 1523 in the sides, apses of the transept and the two vaults of the church of San Giovanni Evangelista, while Parmigianino worked in the side chapels and Corrège painted with fresco the cupola;
  • follows a Conversation Crowned in 1526 in the Cathedral,
  • a Vierge with the Child in glory and the saints Stephan and Jean-Baptiste towards the 1535 for the church of Santo Stefano which, withdrawn by the French in 1803, is preserved now at the Louvre,
  • the frescos of the church of San Bartolomeo to Busseto in 1538,
  • the fresco of the Couronnement of the Virgin in the apse of the church of Santa Maria della Steccata of 1540 with 1542,
  • on the drawings of Giulio Romano , frescos in the Cathedral, a Worship of the Magi and Four prophets of 1554 with 1556, finished since its death by Bernardino Gatti.

Its style

In its works parmesanes, Anselmi remains faithful to its Sienan formation, derived from Sodoma and Beccafumi, but one can also recall the influences of FRA Bartolomeo and Andrea del Sarto.

As of 1520 dominates the influence of the Corrège, with which he collaborates in the frescos of the Cathedral, unifying the Sienan traditional culture with the corrégesque sensual harmony. In late works emergent of the elements drifting mannerists of Giulio Romano even if the style Sienan-corrègesque prevails.

The compositions of Anselmi dynamic, are carried out on the basis of solid drawing and search for effects of hot and brilliant colors; as of the years 1530, it reinforced the light-color ratio and the plasticity of the figures, with a greater interest for the landscape and the space depth.
