Michel de Certeau , born on May 17th 1925 with Chambéry and deceased on January 9th 1986, is a French intellectual author of studies of religious history (especially the mystic of XVIIe and XVIIIe century) and works of more general reflection on the History.

Biography

Jesuit, it will remain always faithful at this institution, although evolving/moving in its " marges". He is cofounder of the Freudienne School of Paris, around Jacques Lacan. Near to Michel Foucault, it engages in favor of the students in 1968. Mystic or has minimum " convinced of expériences" , Michel de Certeau is a complex personality whose work crosses all the fields of social sciences.

The psychoanalytical influence is strongly found in its historiographic work, where it analyzes the " return of the refoulé" through the arbitrary limits of the official story, and the survival of the " not dit" in the margins of the writing. It is a reference, often quoted in research related to the " Farming Studies" (see " The invention of the daily newspaper: 1. Arts of faire" and 2. To live, cuisiner" (joint authors: Luce Giard, Pierre Mayol), and in particular chapter 12 of volume 1: " to see: a braconnage").

Analysis of the " poaching culturel"

De Certeau compares the producers of direction to landowners (thus of texts) who impose the direction of the cultural goods to the consumers, thanks to the regulation of the uses and access. It thus compares the consumers with " braconniers" who come on the grounds to fly of the goods in all illegality to compose their daily newspaper. In fact, they select what interests them in the texts.

The owners work out strategies, actions of control of the space to trap dominated which, them, carry out acts of resistance (for example, zapper, to disencumber) consistent to micro freedoms vis-a-vis being able it.

In the cultural field, the relation between producers and consumers have the uneven air thus because those which say or write impose their capacity on those which listen and read. However in fact, of Certeau shows well that the public ones if are not dominated and remain active in front of the reception of the messages that one sends to them. He preaches a reappropriation of this network imposed by the consumer, via " ruses" or " procédures".

One finds about at the same time this analysis of the mass culture at Edgar Morin (in the Spirit of time , 1962) in France, or in Richard Hoggart ( The Uses off Literacy (1957) translated Culture of poor the , 1970) and Stuart Hall in England (" Encoding, Décodage" , 1977). De Certeau contributed to develop the study of the " media-cultures" in France, then forsaken, and its contribution recently was taken again by E. Macé in Penser media- thecultures (2005).
