Michel Vovelle

Michel Vovelle is a Historien French of the 20th century, specialist in XVIIe and 18th centuries. Former student of the National university of Saint-Cloud, pertaining to the Marxist current , it rehabilitated in the years 1990 the role of the individual actor, up to that point crushed by the economic constraints and social.

He was professor of modern history to the Université Aix-Marseilles I then professor of history of the French revolution with the Université Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne and director of the Institut of history of the French revolution, where he succeeded Albert Soboul. Michel Vovelle incarnates a form of cultural Histoire of the French revolution which integrates the assets of the history of mentalities, and posts like complementary to social Histoire. Its interest for the iconographic sources was consolidated by work of its pupils. It had a central role in the celebrations of the bicentenary of the French revolution in 1989 as a President of the commission of scientific research for the celebration of the bicentenary of the Revolution.
