Trainer
He began his career from trainer with the Titan of Laval in 1993 in the Ligue of hockey major junior of Quebec (LHJMQ) then he joined the Prédateurs of Granby. Thereafter, it is engaged by the frankness Canadian from Montreal to direct their principal subsidiary company to Fredericton (Canadian of Fredericton) in the American Ligue of hockey. Thereafter, the frankness moves with Quebec and it directs the Citadelles of Quebec during 99 parts. In November 2000, the Canadian of Montreal in the National league of hockey make of him them new trainer-chief. Therrien, at its first season, knows a difficult campaign which finishes in cut in front with the last row in the league.
But the following season, 2001-2002 were going to prove to be magic. In spite of the loss of the captain of the Canadian, Saku Koivu, the Canadian is qualified by miracle for the series by beating the Senators of Ottawa 4 to 3 at the time of the return of the captain, who had just overcome cancer. The Canadian pushed even the audacity to beat Bruins to reach the semi-final of the conference of the east.
The Canadian led series 2 to 1, and part 3 to 0 against the Hurricanes of the Caroline. Stephan Quintal bailed out punishment then. Therrien argued with official the Kerry Fraser and bailed out in its turn of a punishment for anti-sporting control. It was the beginning of the end for the Tricolor one which let spin its advance from 3 to 0 in defeat from 4 to 3, followed by two other reverses from 5 to 1 and 8 to 2.
A few months later, in January 2003, it is thanked for its services and is joined the club-school of the Penguins de Pittsburgh in the American Ligue of hockey (LAH), the Penguins de Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
In December 2005, he became trainer of the Penguins de Pittsburgh, succeeding ED Olczyk. He was candidate with the title of the trainer of the year in 2007, but lowered house before another old driver of the Canadian of Montreal (which ironically preceded Therrien), that which now directs the Canucks of Vancouver, Alain Vigneault. That's no problem, one can only confirm that Therrien did a formidable work since its entry in the LNH, on November 20th, 2000.
