" This novel of Jules Verne, who is not science fiction, for once, milked as it was the fashion at the end of the nineteenth century of Russia tsarist and the major tremors which crossed it announcing the revolutions which prepared. Here it is about a revolt of the Tartars against the empire, helped by a Russian general félon. Jules Verne places as regards his special messenger and Tsar sent to Irkoutsk. He mixes in more learnedly repression anti-intellectuals with the Tsar and a dimension in love in this tour with high-risks through the empire, and thus a melodrama tragicomic. For a European film of 1956 the effects large spectacle are rather remarkable with scenes of vast cavalry and troop movements, the descents of tumultuous rivers and the vast Russian plains.
