Michel Smith

Michel Smith (1958, Laval, Quebec, Canada) is a multidisciplinary type-setter Québécois.

He obtains a control in composition of the Faculty of music of the Université of Montreal. It is interested in the electroacoustic and the sound and videographic installation, while creating new musical instruments.

From 1985 to 1986, he will become the clavierist type-setter of the group Madam.

In 1988, it presents vidéomusicale installations to the festival New Music America of Miami. In 1989 and 1990, it creates mixed parts for instruments and band its, is FIX for 6 Violoncelle S and Tolfle for flutes and other instruments of its creation. It also presents an opera, the green disc and its clartées , with the festival Montreal current musics .

In 1990, it appears on compilation CD Électro clips .

In 1992, it creates the Karel Unit, called in the beginning the Orchestra Bicycle, with the sculptor Paskal Dufaux, made up of sound bicycles, which form a travelling orchestra. It will offer services to the Canada, with the the United States, Singapore and Amsterdam. Since 1995, it creates the instrumets, directs, interprets and composes within this unit.

It creates the sound screen for various works with the cinema, on television or with the opera. It is particularly prolific with the theater and collaborates with many setters in Québécois scenes of which André Brassard, Robert Lepage, Lorraine Pintal, Serge Denoncourt, Rene-Daniel Dubois, Alice Ronfart, Yves Sioui, Rene-Richard Cyr and Lorainne Pintal.

In 1997, it creates and presents sound work Macaques at the time of the harbor Symphonies of Montreal . In 1998, it obtains the price of the Jean-Paul-Mousseau Foundation for the whole of his musical work made up for the theater at the time of the Gala of the masks.

In 2000, it appears as a musician on the album éponyme of the Québécois singer Bori.

In 2001, it creates the sound screen of the spectacle with great deployment Kosmogonia present in the City of the Energy of Shawinigan and also presented in album. In 2004, it composes a musical work for 18 musicians and one 90 minutes duration. the spectacle names NEM it , it celebrates the 15th birthday of the New Modern Whole of Montreal, directed by Lorainne Vaillancourt.

He is professor invited in composition with the Faculty of music of the University of Montreal.
