Biography
Michel Seuphor was born on March 10th, 1901 with Antwerp and deceased on February 12th, 1999 in Paris.In 1921, in collaboration with Joseph Peeters and Geert Pijnenburg, it publishes in Antwerp of the review Het Overzicht (the Panorama). Michel Seuphor enters since 1922 in liaison with the artists of avant-garde of the European big cities, Berlin, Rome, Amsterdam then Paris. He binds with Robert and Sonia Delaunay, Mondrian, Fernand Leger, Ozenfant, Tzara, Gleizes, Arp and Sophie Taueber-Arp, Marinetti, Severini, Torrès-Garcia, of the painters as well cubists, dadaïstes, futuristic, constructivists or néo-plastics technicians.
Installed in Paris in 1925, in collaboration with Enrico Prampolini and Paul Dermée, it makes appear the International Documents of the New Spirit .
II then the group Cercle and Carré with Torrès-Garcia founds by bringing together the artists who claimed neoplasticism professed by Mondrian.
In 1930, the three numbers of the review of the same title appear. Michel Seuphor organizes exposures of group, the first in 1930, in which took part in particular Mondrian, Arp, Sophie Taueber, Leger, Schwitters, Kandinsky, Le Corbusier, Pevsner or Sartoris.
Patient, it moves away from Paris and the group Abstraction-Creation, created in 1932 by Vantongerloo continues the work of Cercle and Carré , which was taken again in 1939 by the group of the New Réalités which became Association and Salon in 1946.
Michel Seuphor organizes many exposures as in 1949, the First Masters of the Abstract art , in 1958, 50 years of Abstract art , into 1959 with the United States, Construction and Geometry Painting or the great retrospective exposure of Mondrian to the museum of the Orangery of Tileries the same year.
As a plastics technician, it took part in many collective exposures in France and abroad since 1933. It was entitled also to personal exposures in 1953 to the Berggruen gallery, in 1959 with the gallery Denise Rene in Paris, in Turin in 1967, the Museum of La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1968, with a retrospective in Gemeentemuseum of $the Hague in 1977 like with the Center Beaubourg of Paris, in 1981 with the museum of Bouverie to Liege, in 1986 with the Gallery Treffpunkt Kunst of Saarlouis, in 1989 with the Museum of Saarbrucken and in 1994 with " Galerie" in Paris.
Michel Seuphor was painter and draftsman like ceramist. He had started to create works néo-plastics as from 1926 and had devoted himself to joining since 1953.
A precursor in abstract art critic
Michel Seuphor, who became French in 1954, published a considerable number of literary works and writings on art, in particular of the studies on Mondrian, of which the monograph in 1956, the Dictionnaire of abstract Painting in 1957, Abstract art, its origins, its first Masters and the Sculpture of this century in 1948, abstracted painting, its genesis, its expansion in 1962, Style and the Cry in 1965, and a history of the abstract art in five volumes, in collaboration with Michel Ragon as from 1973.
